Our History

Our History

Medical pioneers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church established an innovative health care program in Battle Creek, Michigan, in 1866, looking to the healing ministry of Christ for inspiration.

During a time when many medical treatments were as harmful as the diseases they were intended to cure, the revolutionary health care center not only treated diseases, but also taught people how to prevent them through good nutrition, exercise and hygiene. It was a place where each person was valued as a creation of God, and where caregivers created a healing environment focused on providing extraordinary whole-person care. Their commitment and philosophy continue today in hundreds of hospitals, nursing homes and clinics around the world.

Part of this worldwide network, AdventHealth was founded in 1973 to support and strengthen the Seventh-day Adventist health care organizations in the Southern and Southwestern regions of the United States. Today it is a national leader in quality, safety and patient satisfaction, comprised of 46 hospital campuses and more than 80,000 employees.

Although separated by geography, each of our facilities is united by the mission of Extending the Healing Ministry of Christ. Today we continue the tradition of whole-person care by practicing and sharing CREATION Health, a blueprint for living a healthy, happy life based on the principles given in the Bible’s creation story: Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Interpersonal relationships, Outlook and Nutrition.

Nursing

If you are new to nursing, we invite you to become the nurse you were meant to be. Our Nurse Residency Program is designed to help you make a smooth transition into the hospital and specialty unit of your choice. Along the way, you can count on us to provide the support, training and mentorship you need to become the nurse you were meant to be.

Some of our program benefits include:

  • Supportive, faith-based environment that is nationally recognized for excellence in patient safety
  • Tuition reimbursement for BSN and Master’s Degrees
  • One-on-one training and mentorship with an experienced preceptor
  • Opportunities to participate in volunteer efforts both locally and globally
  • Health and dental insurance effective on your first day at most campuses
  • On-site child care available at select campuses
  • Clinical ladders to help you advance in your career are available at most campuses
  • Comprehensive Employee Wellness Program

"I have enjoyed the residency program because I feel that the instructors are there for me, and I was given plenty of time with a clinical coach before going it alone. I have and will continue to recommend this program to any nurse with limited nursing experience. It is a great program and will only help a new nurse hone in on the clinical skills needed in everyday nursing practice."
