Our Diversity and Inclusion Journey

  • Barilla is on a journey, and our journey has been one of introspection and discovery.  Today, we are committed to heightening our efforts, setting challenging goals that will help us become a more inclusive workplace; enhancing an open culture that embraces and celebrates.
  • By embarking on result-oriented partnerships with external organizations, implementing tangible changes in policy and procedures, raising awareness of diversity and inclusion naming a Chief Diversity Officer who reports directly to the CEO, and securing a long-term commitment from our senior leadership to these advances.

Diversity Programs & Initiatives

  • Employee Resource Groups
    • Our approach from the start of our journey was to learn from others in order to accelerate our progress, as well as obtain input from our employees. ERGs are voluntary groups organized, led, and formed by Barilla people all around the world, with the aim of encouraging an even more inclusive corporate culture and boosting the change within the Company.
      • Alleanza
        • The mission of Alleanza, which means “Alliance” in Italian, is to increase the representation of Black and Latinx employees at Barilla through recruitment and retention initiatives and promote an inclusive culture where all employees can bring their full identities to work.
      • Balance
        • To promote diversity in gender equity, and work-life balance. Professional, and personal development along with relationship building through the mentorship program.
      • Harmony
        • Harmony, to create an inclusive environment supporting employees that identify as part of the Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) community and their allies.
      • Insieme & Pulse
        • Insieme & Pulse, to promote diversity and equal opportunities in production plants.
      • Voce
        • The mission of VOCE is to promote a more open, inclusive, and mutually respectful work environment by stimulating cultural changes, centered around LGBTQ+ & Ally initiatives.
  • Women Empowerment and Leadership
    • We have taken action to promote women in business enhancing female talent in every aspect of company life.
      • From 8% to 29% of women in Barilla’s top band (direct reports to the CEO) 2013-21
      • From 23% to 37% of women in direct reports to the Global Leadership Team (2014-21)
      • From 33% to 40% of women in leadership positions globally (2014-21)
      • In 2020 we achieved an important goal: Gender Pay Equality for all our people around the world.
  • Advancing Racial Equity
    • "We recognize as an organization that if we are not intentionally including, we may be unintentionally excluding. That is a very important concept when dealing with racial and ethnic diversity." - Talita Ramos Erickson, Chief Diversity Officer, Barilla Group.
    • Our people represent our central resource towards development and success. Advancing opportunities for all is part of our commitment. It is part of our DNA and of our Code of Ethics. We choose to challenge inequality and injustice in every aspect of our business and at all levels of our organization.
    • Systemic inequality/inequity continues to impact the lives of historically excluded groups around the world. At Barilla, our business leaders are committed to tackling these challenges and taking action to build more inclusive, equitable workplaces for racially and ethnically diverse employees.
    • Together with Urban Growers Collective (UGC), a non-profit organization, we are working to strengthen food justice in Chicago's South and West Side communities through the Fresh Moves Mobile Market initiative.
  • Our Key Priority: Disability
    • Including people with different abilities is a key priority for us. We want to overcome physical and mental barriers and push cultural understanding and awareness of visible and invisible disabilities, ensuring inclusion in the workplace.
    • We are collaborating with Hackability to work on innovation and social inclusion through the Hackability@Barilla Project, aimed at designing and developing innovative and low-cost packaging and kitchen tools for better accessibility and autonomy.
    • We confirm our ongoing commitment to disability inclusion by joining the 500Valuable, a global movement whose aim is to engage companies and corporations to put disability on their business leadership agenda.
  • LGBTQ+ Inclusion
    • In 2017, we were the first Italian company to sign up to the Standards of Conduct for Business of the UN High Commissioner Office for Human Rights, aimed at tackling discrimination in business, in order to support the rights of LGBTQ+ communities where companies operate.
    • In 2019, we confirmed our sponsorship of Openly, a new digital news platform, developed by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, dedicated to reporting global problems affecting the LGBTQ+ community.
    • Barilla received a 100% on the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) Corporate Equality Index (CEI) from 2014 to 2022 ranking us as one of the top places to work for LGBTQ+ people. The CEI is the national benchmarking tool measuring policies, practices, and benefits pertinent to LGBTQ+ employees. The HRC’s CEI is a primary driving force for LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion.
  • Our Refugees Program
    • In 2015, we started the Barilla Refugee Program in Sweden, and then expanded it to Germany, France, and Italy. More than 50 refugees have received work experience and training to support them in their integration into the workplace. Many more refugees will be trained through the program.
  • Cultural Change in the Supply Chain
    • We are committed to providing equal opportunities across our entire supply chain, from field to fork. We strive to engage and cultivate suppliers that are reflective of the communities we serve and the values we hold.
    • Our Supplier Diversity and Inclusion program is a natural extension of how we conduct business. Continuing to promote and increase the participation of diverse businesses allows us to further drive innovation, deliver the highest quality products and grow local economies. These unique viewpoints and skills fuel our ability to give back to society in meaningful ways.
