Our story

Where we are going

We are modernizing our electric generating fleet by retiring aging coal plants, and constructing new natural gas and renewable energy resources, including wind facilities. Our values guide our business, and being good stewards of the environment is fundamental to everything we do.

We are committed to serving our customers with safe, reliable and affordable energy in a manner that safeguards our natural resources. We do this because it’s the right thing to do - for generations to come.

Who we are today

We are privileged to provide electricity and natural gas to more than 1.27 million customers in eight states - across hundreds of miles - in the small towns, rural communities and growing cities we call home. We are community members in Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Building on our legacy of service, we remain focused on meeting our customers’ needs while being mindful of the broader economic, social and environmental impacts of our business.

Our history

We're proud of our more than 135-year history. Beginning with the Black Hills Gold Rush, generations of families have relied on us. Our history starts in the Black Hills, supplying electricity to Deadwood, SD when it was a rough-and-tumble gold mining town, back in the days of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill.

We helped fuel a changing economy and experienced how the modern miracle of energy can change how we live. Since 1883 energy has moved us forward. And it will continue to shape our future.

Vision, Mission and Values

At Black Hills Corporation, we emphasize the traits that have contributed to our success in the past, and will be critical to our success in the future.

Vision: We strive to “be the energy partner of choice.” Whether our customers are served by our regulated or non-regulated businesses, we want them to value our service and business relationship.

Mission: Every day, we want to be “improving life with energy.” We produce, market and deliver the vital electricity, coal, oil and natural gas that our customers need. Through our efforts, products and services, we also share our personal energy to strengthen our communities and support growth and development.

Values: We are proud of our employees, and feel they represent what we as a company stand for. There are several key values that have been fundamental to our success, and there are others that will be vital to our future success. These are the values we feel align us to our vision and are demonstrated by Black Hills employees.

Utility Field Careers

Come be part of our family

As a utility and energy company, at our core we are members of and partners with our communities in all eight states we operate in.

Prior utility experience is not required, but a great attitude is! If you have a technical aptitude, construction or mechanical experience, or leadership, customer service, or project management skills, we may have the perfect job for you.

Not everyone is a lineman

We have positions ranging from customer service (supporting our customers), field resource center (scheduling field technicians and services), utility line locators (marking utilities so people dig safely), operations and service technicians (build, install, and maintain equipment), operations management (people and processes), mine and power plant positions (maintaining our facilities and equipment), leadership roles (supervisors up to senior vice presidents), and of course, linemen!

This is more than a job, it's a journey.

We are focused on providing you the resources, support, and guidance you need to build your career and grow within our company. We provide the job-related and safety training you'll need to thrive. Recognition programs are in place to celebrate your successes.

We are so focused on safety that we start each meeting with a safety share. Safety is not just a word here. We live it in our culture and in all of our actions. We do this so that everyone - including you - will go home safely every day.
