Pros

After spending the first 15 years of my career working for a couple of the largest engineering companies, I stepped into a smaller/mid-sized engineering firm. Surprisingly, the bureaucracy, silos, and BS that I had become accustomed to were much less prevalent or virtually non-existent. The focus switched from counting profits to serving your clients and doing good work! GEI has its challenges like every firm, but management actually seem to care! Opportunity to own stock in the company! Great projects! Fantastic technical experts throughout the company! and Willingness to pursue opportunities with my clients regardless of location!

Cons

I would love to be paid more, but who wouldn't.

GEI Consultants, Inc. (GEI) is committed to promoting an inclusive and equitable workplace and increasing diversity through hiring. Creating a company culture with a foundation of diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) is an ongoing, evolving process that extends to our leadership, corporate committees, employment practices, programs and activities. Our major DE&I goals and initiatives are organized into four areas of focus and are evaluated on an annual basis (at a minimum). They include:

  • Educate: We are committed to developing an ongoing learning strategy to educate GEI employees on DE&I topics. We have an external partner who leads company-wide town hall-style presentations to educate all GEI leaders and employees on DE&I topics. More in-depth, cohort-based DE&I workshops have also been implemented and are available for individuals who apply and are selected to attend.
  • Speak Up!: To spread awareness and lay the groundwork for a campaign around speaking up for any behavior that doesn’t align with GEI’s values or partnership culture, GEI has developed monthly talking points for all branch and department leaders to use in regular DE&I discussions during their monthly meetings. GEI is also exploring methods to develop a forum for employees to report positive examples of GEI’s DE&I values being modeled in the workplace, or examples that need awareness and improvement.
  • Take Action: This goal supports involvement and outreach into our local communities to promote a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce at GEI. We are currently partnered with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) to provide mentoring and financial support for members of this organization. We actively seek to promote GEI staff engagement in similar organizations nation-wide and have provided a resource list for those looking to get involved. We are also focused on diversity-based recruiting to continue to grow our population of diverse employees.
  • Engage Allies: Allies are defined as partners, supporters, and collaborators of GEI’s DE&I efforts. We are working to internally communicate the definition of an ally and provide multiple avenues for ally engagement with DE&I efforts company-wide.

History

Geotechnical Engineers, Inc. (GEI) was founded in 1970 by five graduates of Harvard University and MIT. The company's geotechnical roots were planted early on in the nuclear power field, completing projects at more than 20 nuclear power plant sites during its early years.

The company earned an international reputation as a leading consulting engineering firm providing innovative solutions to complex geotechnical issues. As the years progressed, GEI gained strong national presence in the environmental and water resources disciplines.

Over the past 20 years, GEI has acquired leading firms to strengthen our core services offerings, and provide highly complementary services and expanded national footprint to better serve our clients. Acquisitions include:

    • Atlantic Environmental (acquired 1997), a leading Connecticut-based firm founded in 1985, was acquired for its strong expertise in environmental engineering and consulting.
    • Bookman-Edmonston (acquired 2003), the renowned California-based Water Resources consulting firm founded in 1959, has been instrumental in many of the most important water resources projects in the Western United States over the past half century.
    • Chadwick Environmental Consulting (acquired 2006), one of the nation’s top aquatic ecology consulting firms and testing laboratories, founded in 1979 and based in Littleton, Colorado.
    • Energy and Environmental Analysts, Inc. (acquired in 2012), which bolstered GEI's New York City metropolitan area services, particularly in environmental due diligence and site remediation. EEA is a national leader in marine studies, shoreline restoration, wetlands/ecological surveys, and environmental permitting. Founded in 1979, EEA  completed more than 6,000 projects for industrial clients, utilities, municipalities and private corporations.
    • Feld, Kaminetzky & Cohen, P.C. (acquired July, 2013), a Manhattan based consulting engineering firm with additional office in Jericho, New York merged with GEI Consultants, Inc., P.C. in 2013. FKC and its predecessors have served New York metropolitan area architectural and engineering firms, builders, contractors, private clients and public agencies for over 80 years.
    • H2A Environmental, Ltd., (acquired November, 2014) an environmental consulting and remediation firm specializing in non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) management, and risk-based remediation and site closure. The addition of H2A’s engineering experience and Texas location adds tremendous capabilities to help GEI deliver superior exceptional services to clients in the South.
    • Bourne Consulting Engineering (acquired 2016) a distinguished leader in the coastal and waterfront engineering sector serving both public and private clients. The addition of Bourne expanded GEI's coastal engineering and waterfront practice in the Northeast and across the U.S.
    • Inland Seas Engineering (acquired 2017) broadened GEI’s range of engineering, environmental and natural resources expertise and services, strengthening operations in Traverse City and northern Michigan. With the addition of Inland Seas Engineering, GEI gained a team of experienced and dedicated staff in a key region of interest.

A privately held corporation featuring hundreds of technical experts and broad internal ownership, GEI today serves clients across the nation through 38 offices located coast to coast. We have completed over 35,000 projects in all 50 states, across Canada, and more than 25 countries.
