About us

Strengthening Communities

Living Mutual means supporting those who share our vision for a better future. Every year, MassMutual and the MassMutual Foundation invest more than $20 million focused on advancing economic opportunity.

In our view, America is the most prosperous country in the world. Yet too many Americans lack the resources to be financially secure and entire communities are being left behind.

At MassMutual, we’re determined to help create brighter futures for everyone, not just a few. Learn more by visiting the MassMutual Foundation.

Giving of Ourselves

We know that every action supporting a common cause is meaningful, and our employees embody this spirit every day. We’re especially proud of those who make a difference in their own communities through our Matching Gift, Matching Time and Volunteer Time Off Programs.

Standing Up for Others

Through our Law Department’s award winning Pro Bono Program, we provide legal assistance to charitable organizations and people with limited means. We also educate community members on legal and civic issues.

Our core partnership is with the Hampden Country Bar Association’s Legal Clinic (HCLC) through which we provide underserved and underrepresented communities with access to legal services in areas such as housing, family law and consumer debt. Additionally, the Pro Bono Committee sponsors volunteers to help veterans in discharge upgrade cases and immigrants seeking asylum. The Law Department also encourages its members to volunteer their time and talent by selecting Pro Bono opportunities that are most meaningful to them.

In addition to providing direct legal services, the Pro Bono Program runs a free, one-week law school boot camp for Springfield, Massachusetts high school students with the goal of increasing diversity in the legal profession.

Our Commitment to People

Treating people with respect is second nature to us at MassMutual. It’s how we treat our customers and how we treat each other. We believe one way to show respect is to help people take care of themselves financially, intellectually, physically and emotionally.

We also believe that healthy, happy teams will take better care of our customers. Our wellness initiatives, which help employees and their families eat better, stay active and be mindful of their health, have been honored by the American Heart Association and the National Business Group on Health, among others. In 2017 we invested $1.6 million in our employee education assistance program. We have been recognized by the Korn Ferry Institute as a leading organization for our diversity and inclusion efforts, and have earned accolades from organizations that measure best practices for our support of LGBTQ, women, veterans, and individuals with a disability.

Our Commitment to the Environment

MassMutual is a big company, but we try to leave a small environmental footprint by focusing on conservation, efficiency and renewable energy.

One of our goals is to reduce the amount of energy and natural resources it takes to run our business. Our Springfield, Massachusetts, corporate headquarters has earned a Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB®) rating for energy use and air quality from the U.S. Green Building Council. The building uses low-flow water fixtures and high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment, and the parking lot has a rain harvesting system to irrigate campus grounds.

We’re increasing our use of more naturally-occurring energy sources like solar. For example, 1,750 solar panels on the roof of our headquarters building produce 384,000 kilowatts of electricity annually and 50 percent of our hot water. MassMutual’s cafeteria has an onsite herb garden, uses locally-sourced produce and participates in a recycling program. Our green commuter programs provide carpooling and vanpooling to all our campuses.

Our Commitment to Ethics and Integrity

Our policyowners and customers rely on us to help secure their futures and protect the ones they love. We take those responsibilities very seriously and conduct ourselves with the highest ethics and utmost integrity.

Our ethical culture permeates all parts of MassMutual. Everyone from our Board of Directors to our managers, employees and financial professionals reflects our values, follows our corporate governance policies and maintains trusting relationships with policyowners, customers and communities.

We continually educate and inform our employees on ethics issues through our code of conduct, compliance training and communication programs.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

Together, We're Stronger

We believe diversity includes the broadest possible range of cultures, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, while inclusion means creating an environment where all people and ideas are valued. Our goal is to welcome everyone — customers, employees, suppliers and visitors alike. Our passion for diversity and inclusion is not only about doing the right thing; it also helps us achieve our purpose to help people secure their future and protect the ones they love. Read a letter from CEO Roger Crandall.

Diversity at Every Level

For diversity to live across an organization, it also needs to live at every level. That’s why we actively pursue workforce diversity, including in our boardroom. 45 percent of our Board of Directors is comprised of women and people of color, making it one of the most diverse groups in the industry and among FORTUNE® 500 companies.

We place a strong emphasis on relationship-building activities, like engaging diverse employees in mentoring and networking opportunities and efforts that drive business impact.

Our Business Resource Groups (BRGs) are internal diversity, equity and inclusion champions who support recruitment, community outreach, awareness and education, brand recognition, marketing, retention and professional development. We currently have eight national BRGs representing African Americans, Asians, Latinx, members of the LGBTQ community, individuals with disabilities and their caregivers, armed forces members, veterans and military family members, young professionals and women leaders.
