Our business model
We are an international electricity and gas company based in the UK and northeastern US. We play a vital role in connecting millions of people safely, reliably and efficiently to the energy they use.
We are at the heart of one of the greatest challenges facing our society – delivering clean energy to support our world long into the future.
We work with all our stakeholders to promote the development and implementation of sustainable, innovative and affordable energy solutions.
And we are proud that our work, and our people, underpin the prosperity and wellbeing of our customers, communities and investors.
The company is at the heart of one of the greatest challenges facing our society – to create new, sustainable energy solutions for the future and developing an energy system that underpins economic prosperity in the 21st century. National Grid holds a vital position at the centre of the energy system and it ‘joins everything up’.
In the northeast US, we connect more than seven million gas and electric customers to vital energy sources, essential for our modern lifestyles. In Great Britain, we run the gas and electricity systems that our society is built on, delivering gas and electricity across the country.
National Grid delivers electricity to approximately 3.4 million customers in Massachusetts, New York and Rhode Island. We own over 4,000 megawatts of contracted electricity generation, providing power to over one million LIPA customers. We are the largest distributor of natural gas in the northeast US, serving approximately 3.6 million customers in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
The electricity industry connects generation sources to homes and businesses via transmission and distribution networks. Electricity is sold to consumers by companies who have bought it from the generators and pay to use the networks across which it is transmitted.
The gas industry connects producers, processors, storage, transmission and distribution network operators, as well as suppliers to industrial, commercial and domestic users.
What we believe
At National Grid we encourage everyone to respect others and value their diversity. To take ownership for driving performance. And to always be open and act with integrity in all relationships. Living these values makes sure we work as one team, one National Grid. Especially as collaboration is the norm.
It's vital that everyone contributes. After all, energy is essential to every community, the challenges never let up and the pace can be intense. On top of all that, we're determined to cement our reputation as a responsible, sustainable business and an industry leader. So we look for innovation and we expect high performance.
In return, we enhance the skills and capabilities of our people in a host of innovative ways. We help them excel in everything from health and safety to inclusion and diversity, from tackling climate change to delivering customer service. And we're big on recognition, rewarding those whose performance sets the standard we all strive for. At the same time, we know a healthy balance between work and life outside it benefits us all.
The result is an organisation full of people who respect, value and support each other while always challenging themselves to achieve more. People who are equipped to make the most of all the career opportunities we offer. Our diverse teams are packed with experience and expertise, and are proud to have safety as their number one priority.
