PCI: DRIVING ENGAGEMENT AND CONTRIBUTIONS

PCI's Seven Driving Values

At the time I joined PCI I had recently finished reading Built to Last, the wonderful book by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras which analyzed 18 visionary companies and the underlying reasons for their success. Even today it remains one of my all-time favorite books. One of the key traits that Collins and Porras identified that allowed these companies to be successful over decades and even centuries was that each company had a set of deeply ingrained values. It wasn’t that they had the “same” values but rather that each visionary company had a set of values that was specific to them. I found this idea to be very powerful.

We brought together a small team inside PCI to set about the process of articulating our values – which was both interesting and fun. People, families, and organizations all have values. Our job wasn’t to “create” PCI’s values, but rather to capture and articulate them. One of things I enjoyed about the process was that it allowed us to pursue two, somewhat contradictory goals.
One of our objectives was capture the values and philosophies that had made my dad and my grandfather successful. For example, the first value we put forward was Excellence: “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” My dad had made that statement to my sister and me countless times while we were growing up. Integrity (“We require complete honesty and integrity in everything we do”), Profitability (“To achieve our personal and professional goals, we must make money and generate cash”) and Service (“We see each day as an opportunity to serve our clients, our community, and each other”) were other core values held by my dad and grandfather.
Second, as a newly-minted MBA from Northwestern, I was excited about the opportunity to expand and improve the business. We not only wanted to look backward, we wanted to look forward and transform the company. This desire for growth was the driver behind our Change value (“Like the samurai warrior, our motto is ‘Act Fearlessly’”) as well as our Fun value (“Work is an important part of life and it should be fun!”).

To transform PCI we realized our first and most important goal was to attract and retain the right group of people who shared this passion. This realization led to our People Value. Today, we have crystallized our People value to its essence: “We believe people have potential. We believe people have the capacity for greatness.” I believe it is worthwhile though to refer back to our People value in its entirety as it is a summation of all of our values and a clear vision for what we are trying to accomplish at PCI.
