For over 120 years, Venable has built a firm based on a simple and enduring premise: to see the world through the eyes of our clients. We immerse ourselves in our clients' work to help them navigate their biggest challenges.
Pros
Everyone is very friendly and helpful. The pay is very good. Most firms are not as nice as this one.Cons
Very corporate - although the party line is that they care about the individuals (and they do a lot to compensate their employees), at the end of the day their priority is the bottom line. Also, they are pushing for return to office, which is not ideal.Venable has long recognized the importance of promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion at all levels across the firm. Cultivating an environment where all of our professionals feel a sense of belonging is an essential component of our continued success. We understand, however, that building a truly inclusive culture requires continuous focus and creativity. At Venable, our commitment starts at the top.
In 2017, the firm’s chairman, Stu Ingis, established a board-level Diversity and Inclusion Initiative to examine our progress and identify ways to do better. Since then, we have taken several steps to accelerate our efforts, including hiring the firm’s first chief diversity and inclusion officer. This critical position will advance collaboration with firm leadership to integrate our DEI efforts with the firm’s talent functions, including recruiting, professional development, and business development, among others.
While we are continuing to develop and enhance our diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy, we have already made significant progress. Today, 42 percent of our 19-person board comprises women and racially diverse partners, and 30 percent of the firm’s 13-member management committee are either women or racially diverse. Among our non-legal professional staff firmwide, 47% are racially diverse. And among the firm’s senior leadership, nearly 60% of directors and above are women and more than 16% are racially diverse.
A large part of our mission is to communicate meaningfully and consistently with all firm personnel; we have created thoughtful educational programs and provide resources that raise awareness of the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion and encourage cross-cultural competency. Some recent programs hosted by Venable have included dialogue circles that address the impact of systemic racism; a speaker series exploring race, gender, and sexuality; special-emphasis program observances; and panel discussions on race, gender identity, and the use of non-binary pronouns.
