ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

The primary mission of an Alliance School Counselor Intern is to develop their professional practice and support scholars to be prepared for, admitted to, and successful through college. The school counselor interns grows to develop strategies and implements activities to address the needs of the scholars to meet this goal; consults and collaborates with school staff; and works with parents/guardians to support scholars' success.


GAIN EXPERIENCE IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS (UNDER SUPERVISION OF CREDENTIALED SCHOOL COUNSELOR)

Provide guidance to support school completion

  • Help execute orientation activities for incoming 6th and 9th graders and scholars new to the school
  • Participate in orientation programs for parent/guardians and scholars
  • Learn about and provide resources/information to assist scholars to develop a rigorous academic course schedule, aligned with scholars' skills and interests
  • Learn to evaluate scholars graduation status and support counselors inform scholars of their status
  • Assist in registration and schedule changes/conflicts for all scholars
  • As necessary, support the development of 504 plans, participate in Individual Education Plan meetings, and contribute in the development of the Student's Individual Transition Plan (ITP)
  • Participate in and/or support Student Success Team (SST) meetings

Provide guidance to support college matriculation and completion aligned with student personal interests and strengths

  • Learn to create a college-going culture across the school, at all grade levels
  • Support career awareness activities across all grade levelsSupport scholars in identifying path towards post-secondary options, developing list of colleges and universities to which to apply, applying to colleges and matriculating to college
  • Assist in creating programs related to financial readiness for all grade levels

Support personal development of scholars

  • Learn to conduct structured, goal oriented, data driven guidance to meet the identified needs of individuals or group of scholars
  • Support in the creation of guidance learning activities in the classroom to facilitate the infusion of guidance as integrated to the total education curricula.
  • Refer scholars, as needed, to district and community resources in consultation with their parents/guardians
  • Consult and coordinate the referral process with other school and district personnel including school psychologists, social workers, nurses, administrators, teachers and other community resources
  • Consult and collaborate with school counselors, social workers, school psychologists, teachers, other school staff and parents/guardians regarding the developmental needs of scholars

Provide systems support by coordinating and conducting activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school consistent with the approved school counseling program

  • Learn about and use district technology, e.g. PowerSchool, Pinnacle, Naviance, QuickPermit to inform and drive the counseling program
  • Build community resources to promote scholars' academic, personal/social & career success
  • Act as an advocate for scholars as appropriate in conjunction with other staff
  • Collaborate with parent engagement specialists to provide opportunities for parent education programs
  • Foster the development and improvement of school counseling; read professional journals; attend workshops and conferences, and continue coursework

  • Data driven and systems level thinking: Analyzes data regarding services provided and make adjustments as necessary. Effectively develops and implements systems to improve efficiency and scale services to scholars and families.
  • Initiative: Actively seeks out resources that benefit scholars and families for a variety of personal, academic, college related themes.
  • Strong counseling practices: Demonstrates understanding of best-in-class counseling practices and interventions related to high school completion, college selection and success, and student personal development. Understands the legal and ethical issues surrounding scholars and families.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Enrollment in a program leading to a masters in counseling or related discipline
  • Enrollment in a program leading to a Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) Credential in School Counseling
