Job Description

Allergan Aesthetics R&D, Biological Research is seeking a highly motivated and innovative candidate for the role of Associate Research Scientist II - In Vitro Pharmacology.

The successful candidate for this position will work independently and as part of a team to contribute expertise to projects aimed at designing, developing, and optimizing novel in vitro complex cell models that mimic physiological or pathological conditions and enable the study of various biological processes as well as facilitating compound screening efforts. This role requires expertise in cell and organ culture techniques, stem cell culture and induced cell differentiation, tissue engineering, and a strong background in molecular biology. Additionally, the candidate will participate and conduct in vitro assay development work to support discovery research projects and target validation studies in diseases of hair and skin.  She/he/they will organize, analyze, and interpret results, and make recommendations based on experimental findings.  

The candidate will collaborate extensively with other research scientists and associates, while taking personal responsibility for the success of assigned tasks and projects.  Experimental design will be guided in consultation with senior scientific team members, but the candidate is expected to conduct experiments with substantial independence or in collaboration with other scientists as appropriate. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and optimize protocols for the efficient and reproducible differentiation of iPSCs into specific cell types.
  • Characterize and validate the differentiated cells using molecular and functional assays to ensure their fidelity and functionality.
  • Work in a team environment and coordinate the design, development, and optimization of in vitro assays to support discovery research projects and target validation studies related to hair and skin diseases.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including biologists, engineers, and data scientists, to integrate the developed cell models into larger research projects, including supporting in vivo model development and in vivo studies
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in the field of in vitro cell models/assays to incorporate cutting-edge techniques and technologies into the development process.
  • Conduct experimental approaches with some supervisory guidance.  Discuss, recommend, and modify, troubleshoot experimental techniques as needed.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills with detailed and organized documentation of experimental plans, data analysis, dissemination of results, and electronic notebook record keeping.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and appropriate documentation of work performed.  Assist supervisor in maintaining project documentation.
  • Attend and participate in lab, team and departmental meetings.  Presentation of data as required.
  • Understand and adhere to corporate standards regarding code of conduct, safety, appropriate handling of materials, controlled drug and radioactive compounds, GxP compliance, and animal care where applicable
  • Ability to work a rotating schedule which may include weekend and holiday coverage to feed cells

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience OR Master’s degree 
  • Degree in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Stem Cell Biology, Tissue Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with primary (non-immune) cell culture, iPSC culture and/or stem cells is required
  • Strong knowledge and technical expertise in molecular biology techniques, including enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), qPCR, western blot, multiparameter flow cytometry, and/or immunofluorescence. (Flow Cytometry highly preferred)

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficiency in advanced cell culture techniques, including iPSC culture and differentiation, primary cell isolation, immortalized cell lines, three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems, co-culture systems and organoid culture systems
  • Experience in characterizing and validating differentiated cells using functional assays and molecular markers.
  • Strong knowledge of skin biology, including understanding of skin tissue structure, function, and relevant disease mechanisms are preferred
  • Knowledge of tissue engineering principles, biomaterials for in vitro cell models are preferred
  • Familiarity and/or practical experience with omics techniques and large datasets analysis are preferred
  • Direct experience with high-throughput screening platforms and automation.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and scientific writing skills
  • Demonstrates effective use of software, such as Word, Excel, data acquisition systems, document management software, data analysis software, etc.

Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
