Accounting Clerk – Affordable Housing

Job Title: Accounting Clerk – Affordable Housing

Program/Services: Business Office

Location: New Lenox, IL

Job Type: Full-time; 40 hours per week

Job Description:

Position Overview - Reporting to the Controller, this position will be responsible for managing and reconciling tenant rents and deposits for 108 low-income permanent supportive housing units, processing and reconciling social security payments for 400+ CILA residents, and completing all compliance reporting for six PSH locations.

Essential Duties:

  • Social Security Benefits
    • Remotely scan and deposit benefit checks into appropriate client accounts
    • Prepare deposit journals and enter information into ERP system
    • Manage and reconcile resident room and board cost deductions and apply to appropriate accounts, client ledgers and property ledgers
  • HUD/Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA)
    • Monitor, initiate and manage tenant certifications when they come due (annually)
      • Prepare all documentation required by certification agency (HUD or IHDA)
      • Access appropriate HUD systems and gather required information for certification
      • Monitor and manage the certification process unless successfully completed.
    • Process monthly HUD and IHDA tenant subsidies
      • Log subsidy transactions, prepare ERP entries and update rent/subsidy schedules
    • HUD/IHDA annual audits, reviews or inspections
      • Coordinate all required tenant income verification, rent and subsidy receipts, in support of an inspection, audit or review
      • Work with property managers, business office and departments to assure that all records and documentation for the review are in place, accurate and prepared for review
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to make independent decisions and problem solve
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Familiarity and experience with spreadsheets’
  • Experience with HUD systems preferred

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1 -3 years in a bookkeeping or accounting office
  • Experience with tenant/rent bookkeeping and/or HUD property record-keeping preferred
