Administrative Intern – Nowicki Fellow for Student Engagement

Office of Undergraduate Education

Official Job Title: Nowicki Fellow for Student Engagement

Job Code/Level/Family: TBD

Department: Office of Undergraduate Education

Supervisor: Assistant Vice Provost for Intellectual Community

Position Status: Regular; Full Time; Exempt

Term of Appointment: Limited term of two years with option to renew for a third year based on performance and availability of funding

Occupational Summary

The Nowicki Fellow for Student Engagement will support existing programs and work on a variety of special projects in service of the mission of the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE). Rotating through each of OUE’s three divisions – Student Success, Intellectual Community, and Experiential Education – the Nowicki Fellow will have the opportunity to learn about – and significantly contribute to - many aspects of OUE’s work with and for students. Duties are likely to include serving as a liaison to undergraduate students and student organizations throughout the University, planning and coordinating events and activities, communicating with OUE’s campus partners about joint projects, conducting research on issues affecting Duke undergraduates, and working with OUE communication channels to help publicize OUE’s activities to the student population and beyond. Eligibility is limited to applicants who (will have) received their bachelor’s degree from Duke in 2021 or 2020. Initial appointment is for twelve months, but the position can be renewed for one additional year by mutual agreement. The Nowicki Fellow reports primarily to OUE’s Assistant Vice Provost for Strategy and Communications but will work closely with project supervisors in all divisions.

Responsibilities

Because the Nowicki Fellowship is intended to be an educational and professional development experience for the Fellow, providing both broad exposure to the field of undergraduate education and the opportunity to focus on areas of special interest to the Fellow, specific duties will change throughout the year (as the Fellow rotates through different OUE divisions and units) and will also be tailored to some degree to the Fellow’s qualifications and aspirations. In general, however, the Fellow should expect to:

  • work closely with various student groups and constituencies, including OUE’s Student Advisory Board, to promote awareness and understanding of OUE’s work among students and of students’ perspectives within OUE;
  • conceive, design, plan, market, implement, and assess the effectiveness of activities and events intended for a large and diverse undergraduate audience;
  • attend meetings and otherwise communicate regularly with OUE’s campus partners, including units of the Division of Student Affairs, to help coordinate joint projects (and other, less formal, areas of collaboration);
  • assist with qualitative and quantitative research intended to inform OUE’s work, including the design, execution, and analysis of surveys and focus groups of the student population, with special attention to the needs and experiences of students with underrepresented and marginalized identities;
  • develop and implement effective internal and external communications strategies, that are attuned to the culture of the Duke undergraduate student body and also OUE office needs;
  • prepare reports, presentations, spreadsheets, and proposals for audiences that are internal (to OUE) and external (Duke and beyond);
  • support coordination of special projects, committee work, and other strategic initiatives as they arise.
