Position Summary:

Admissions Reader positions are Time-As-Reported (TAR) assignments with an end date that allow individual(s) to work approximately five months (November-March) based upon the amount of application files received and the needs of the organization. Combined with a spike in applications (well over 20K) and realized efficiencies in Operations, we have record levels of admissions files to read and review. Reader positions are designed to supplement the resources needed to reach current reading levels and to offer assistance and expertise to the full-time admissions staff. Readers function primarily as first reviewers for the Application Review Team and are expected to read on average four files per hour. Readers will be assigned to first reads by the Project Director, Admissions.

Admissions Readers must exhibit excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills in a diverse environment, as well as the ability to demonstrate a professional and resourceful approach. Must possess demonstrated customer service experience that incorporates a global perspective along with commitment to diversity and ability to work in a team setting with all levels of management and staff. Readers need to convey an enthusiastic attitude, display excellent judgement, and possess solid time management skills. Readers work autonomously and yet function as part of a larger team.

Proficiency in Word, Excel, and web applications is required; weekend and evening work is likely. Regularly scheduled and ad hoc one-on-one meetings with the Project Director and territory managers are likely. Occasional attendance at meetings on-campus or via a virtual meeting platform may be required. Additional cross-training within College Enrollment may also occur.

Specific Responsibilities:

35% Credentials Review:

  • Verify the authenticity of domestic and international applications' documents and confirm that the information displayed in each applicant's on-line file is accurate.
  • Calculate core grade point average from information on applicants' transcript(s).
  • Ensure that the minimum number of application items received is sufficient to evaluate students for admission purposes, follow-up with applicants or schools for missing required documentation necessary to complete the evaluation, if needed.

35% Documentation and Recommendations for Admissibility:

  • Read and review up to 500 freshman applications for first reads from any region as needed.
  • Summarize first reader observations with notes in the Slate system and enter appropriate ratings to support decision recommendations.
  • Enter first reader recommendation (admit, wait-list, deny, or HEOP refer) into the Slate system to facilitate the movement of files to second readers for review.
  • Complete required comprehensive descriptive notes to guide the second reader. Second readers will determine if first reader has provided enough information to allow for a second reader recommendation.
  • Review applicants to Professional Degree Programs (PDP) such as REMS [Rochester Early Medical Scholars], GEAR [Graduate Engineering @ Rochester, GRADE [Guaranteed Rochester Accelerated Degree in Education], HEAL [Health and Epidemiology Advanced Learning] and Dual Degree Programs with the School of Nursing [DDN] and at the Eastman School of Music [DDE], ranking their viability against the criteria of the respective program.

20% Merit Review / Assessment:

  • After making admissions decision recommendations, determine if a merit scholarship should be awarded to a student.
  • Justify recommendations in notes regarding merit scholarship consideration in the department for the merit review process.

10% General Responsibilities:

  • Attend regularly scheduled meetings and on-campus/virtual training.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor or other senior leaders.

Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and training is required. Work in a related field such as counseling or human resources considered; one year of relevant admissions experience or school counseling preferred. New York State residency is required. Individuals currently employed as an Admissions representative, high school or independent college counselor, or Admissions Reader for another institution presents a conflict of interest and will not be considered.
