Advanced Quality Engineering Intern

Position Overview

This position will provide support Proterra’s Advanced Quality group. You will be responsible for supporting product and process integrity through the assistance in activities for internal and external related to process development, qualification, optimization as well as product and supplier certification in line with company protocols and objectives.

About the Role – You will:

  • Assist AQE group during product pre-launch and launch at Proterra Battery Preproduction and Production sites.
  • Help with gathering information for PPAP activities for OEM customers; help with quality documentation, such as PFMEAs, Control Plans, FAIR, quality assurance specifications, etc.
  • Assist in Root Cause analysis and problem-solving skills for OEM complaints or development issues
  • Support quality control by helping with inspections, ensuring the product and process comply with relevant specifications and requirements (FMVSS, DOT, FTA, White book, VDA, etc.)
  • Work with Assembly, Product Development and Sales to ensure that customer expectations and contract requirements are met.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

  • This position will be part of the Quality team that supports Proterra Powered operations across all Proterra Battery locations.
  • You will report to the AdvancedQuality Manager and collaborate with other Quality team members located in Burlingame, CA/ Los Angeles, CA and our manufacturing facility in Greenville, SC.

About You:

  • Familiarity with stage gate style processes and quality readiness deliverables, such as FMEA’s, Control Plans, Commissioning, etc.
  • Self-starter with the ability to adapt interpersonal styles and techniques to influence at all levels of the organization and active coordination with other departments.
  • Customer-focused attitude, with high level of professionalism and discretion.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, establish trust and credibility, act with complete integrity, and help others to maintain the same expected performance standards.
  • Detail-oriented, resourceful, diligent, and works under pressure with tight schedules that may require extra hours to meet deadlines.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Your Experience Includes:

  • Bachelors’ Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Understanding of problem-solving skills supported by structured Root Cause analysis, may include the following: Kepner-Tregoe, Triz, Shainin, etc.
  • Familiar with Core Quality Tools (FMEA, DVP, Control Plans, MSA…etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
  • Knowledge of quality and continuous improvement tools
  • Proficient computer skills that may include the following applications: Microsoft Office Suite, Oracle, Arena, Outlook, or similar applications
  • Experience using the following measurement tools including but not limited to gages, calipers, micrometers, optical comparators
  • Physical Demands:
    • May be requested to travel to different customer locations.
    • Lifting up to 25 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds.
    • Able to walk, stand, crouch, bench, kneel, lift, carry and reach as needed in large and tight spaces.
    • Good eye/hand coordination and ability to identify color variations, depth perceptions and close or distance visual items.
    • Manual dexterity with occasional repetitive finger motion.
  • Environmental Demands:
    • Ability to work in manufacturing environment with extreme heat and cold conditions.
    • Wear protective clothing or respiratory protective equipment.
    • Works with irritant chemicals, gases, etc.
