The Department of Justice, Law, and Criminology seeks a graduate assistant to work with us Summer of 2025. At the Department of Justice, Law & Criminology in the AU School of Public Affairs, we give you the tools you need to tackle today’s critically important challenges in criminal justice and criminology, terrorism and homeland security, and justice and law.
Situated only a short distance from the seats of power and justice in Washington, D.C.—and just steps from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security offices—our programs put our students in the middle of one the best places to influence change. Our faculty is comprised of some of our nation’s foremost experts. We conduct impactful research and work with policymakers and practitioners to craft solutions to some of our nation’s most pressing security concerns. Through our renowned research centers, their scholarship is shared with the greater Washington community, across the nation, and around the world.

This Graduate Assistant position provides an opportunity to learn how to develop tactical approaches and strategic security solutions our nation can use, while growing your research, writing, and communication skills.
Responsibilities:
Conduct research projects for JLC faculty, including Terrorism and Homeland Security Policy (THSP), Counterterrorism and Homeland Security (CTHS) and the Cyber Certificate Program.
Assist in planning the National Security Speakers Series for Fall 2025 as well as helping plan other large-scale events.
Help update website materials across programs.
Develop math tutorials for graduate students in the JLC master’s programs.
Other administrative and program support duties when necessary.
Position Type/Expected Hours Of Work:
Part-Time.
25 hours per week for the Summer 2025 semester.
Salary Range:
The position will pay $22 an hour
Required Education and Experience:
Current graduate student at American University.
Excellent writing and communication skills.
Knowledge of basic software programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Proficiency in R.
Advanced knowledge of mathematical concepts.
Qualitative and Quantitative data analysis skills.
Knowledge of/experience in cybersecurity.
