The Assistant Director of Academic Advising will assist the Director in implementing college-wide academic advising services, programming, and new student registration. This position directly advises undergraduate students via individual appointments and group meetings. The Assistant Director will provide guidance in the understanding and sequencing of academic requirements, navigating academic policies and procedures, developing long and short-term goals, preparing for course selection and registration, and monitoring academic performance and degree progression. Reporting to the Associate Director of Academic Advising, this position will serve as a liaison to Visual Media Arts where they will primarily advise students within this academic department. They will assist the Director and the Academic Advising team by registering all new first-year students. The Assistant Director will be expected to offer supplemental advising support to students paired with faculty mentors. This position will collaborate with other campus support offices, faculty members, and department chairs to ensure the overall academic success of students

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Academic Advising - Individual Meetings
  • Serve as direct advisor to approximately 375-400 first-year and sophomore students, primarily the Visual Media Arts student population.
  • Assist all undergraduate students seeking an individual academic advising appointment, including students assigned to faculty mentors.
  • Provide guidance on curriculum planning and course sequencing discuss major/minor options, study abroad/domestic programs, and experiential learning opportunities prepare for course selection and registration any other topic related to long-term academic planning.
  • Share consistently accurate advice that supports the pursuit of various academic goals within an anticipated graduation timeline.
  • Monitor academic standing, address questions/concerns impacting degree progression, and outreach when appropriate.
  • Refer students to appropriate support offices: Writing and Academic Resource Center; Career Development Center; Student Accessibility Services; Student Care and Support; Student Success; Counseling Services; Office of the Registrar; Internationalization and Equity; and Financial Aid.
  • Collaborate with campus partners, chairs/faculty, and parents/families to address obstacles that may compromise academic and personal success.


Academic Advising - Group Meetings
  • Meet with each new student caseload at Orientation to establish the essential advising relationship and to introduce the various academic services offered.
  • Conduct group advising for new first-year students to prepare for course selection/registration, review curriculum sequencing, and discuss academic policies/procedures.
  • Assist with the preparation and dissemination of materials/communications for these programs.

Visual Media Arts Liaison
  • Primarily advise the Visual Media Arts (VMA) first-year and sophomore student population.
  • Act as the VMA liaison to support departmental policies, procedures, and goals.
  • Assist with the training and orienting of new faculty mentors while providing consultation throughout the year as needed.

New Student Registration
  • Assist Director and Academic Advising Team by registering all new first-year students for their first semester coursework (over 1,000 each year).
  • Create and review all schedules to ensure accuracy, considering all factors: foundational major requirements; Liberal Arts curriculum; academic accommodations; transfer/exam-based credits; participation in special programs such as Honors, athletics, Emersion: Foundations of Success - Emerson's new student transition program.
  • Assist with the preparation and revision of registration materials/communications for each enrollment.
  • Participate in full-day walk-in hours during the registration and add/drop periods when student need is peak.

College Student Events
  • Represent the Academic Advising Center at campus-wide events and actively participate in advising-related programming at Admission open houses, new student Orientation, campus partner events, and academic department workshops.
  • Assist with the development of materials and communications for these programs as needed.
  • Encouraged to facilitate a section of Emersion: Foundations of Success - Emerson's new student transition program.

QUALIFICATIONS - Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to effectively perform the job.
  • Master's degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling psychology, or related field is required
  • Two or more years of experience in advising or counseling students in a higher education setting (preferred) or relevant environment
  • Experience working with a diverse student body in a multicultural setting

  • Ability to utilize multiple platforms and databases for records management (i.e., DegreeWorks, Banner, Maxient, Slate, etc.)
  • Knowledge of post-secondary academic systems and student development theories
  • Background in or knowledge of communication or the arts

COMPENSATION

The hiring salary range for this position is $68,691 - $84,146, commensurate with years of relevant experience.

This position is primarily a hybrid role with mandatory days in the office as needed. The hybrid arrangement will be made upon hire. Candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the Boston campus in order to ensure operational effectiveness.

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25

This position will be exclusively represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 888 for purposes of wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
