This role can be based in any Baker McKenzie US Office location.The BML Data Scientist will join our multidisciplinary team to support the ideation and development of BakerML offerings through proofs of concept, piloting, and delivering minimal viable solutions, as well as putting successful prototypes into production. BakerML is expanding following a series of successful pilots and deployments, focusing on leveraging more recent advances in Foundation Models and emerging AI agent technologies.In 2021, Baker McKenzie invested in an advanced AI and Machine Learning practice (BakerML) that combines ongoing AI technology advances, internal and external data, and legal domain expertise to create new value for clients, our firm, and our communities globally. BakerML sits at the forefront of legal services innovation and is at the center of Reinvent, the Firm’s innovation program.Responsibilities:• Support scoping various AI-driven projects, including working with the latest Large Language and Multimodal Foundation Models. Support the BakerML Data Science and wider team to identify and evaluate source materials, translate legal and business questions into AI/ML problems, and develop prototype solutions that address high-value client and business needs with tangible ROI• As part of a project team, contribute to the delivery of GenAI-based projects by combining your technical skills with learned functional knowledge of project-relevant legal domains to support the build of applications, workflows, and dashboards. This is an iterative process, and you will help design and build user-testing strategies• Support moving prototype solutions into a production environment including working with other teams in the firm (e.g. Infrastructure, Networks & Global Security) and writing production-level code to deploy apps in Azure, or backend code (in Python) to deploy apps in collaboration with our Technology function• Discover insights on structured and unstructured data, including data preparation; building data pipelines; working with business stakeholders to discover relevant insights; and delivering those insights using effective visualization and dashboards• In a rapidly evolving technology and commercial landscape, continuously and proactively learn and apply relevant advances in AI and adjacent fields, share that knowledge with the team, and contribute to the onboarding of new team membersSkills and Experience:• Strong relevant professional experience with a Master's level degree (Ph.D. preferred) in a quantitative field (e.g. data science, mathematics, economics, computer science, statistics, econometrics, engineering, physics, neuroscience, operations research, etc.)• Expertise in wrangling and preparing structured data for insight discovery and visualization using coding languages (python, SQL, etc.)• Expertise in wrangling structured and unstructured data (e.g. Word documents, .pdfs, etc) for GenAI projects using coding languages• Foundational knowledge about recent GenAI advances (especially LLMs and other Foundation Models) including limitations; ability to rapidly develop technical expertise in this fast-evolving field• Able to develop functional knowledge in any project-relevant legal domain in a very short period; collaborate effectively with lawyers and other experts in different practice groups• Able to use technical knowledge and skills to build GenAI-powered solutions, including prototype applications, workflows, and dashboards (using coding language); rapidly pilot and iterate potential solutions with SMEs (prior experience preferred, but not required)• Able to collaborate with project managers, the BakerML team, and practice teams to conduct effective prototype user testing• Able to collaborate with Baker McKenzie’s IT function to deploy a prototype solution in the Firm’s production environment. Prior experience with Azure infrastructure is preferred• Strong verbal and written communication skills. Able to explain technical concepts and deliver project demos to audiences with various backgrounds, including internal and external clients. Able to document knowledge and learnings in a written format• Intellectually curious; able to proactively learn new relevant knowledge and skills, and share them with the wider teamThis position is bonus eligible and includes benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) based on number of hours worked. The US base compensation for this position is expected to be $150,000 to $200,000 annually if located in any California, Chicago, Washington DC or New York office. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
