Narrative Director
We're looking to build a world-class team of game-makers: folks bursting with creativity, who balance candor with compassion, and always, always, always hold themselves and their peers accountable to what's best for players.
You’ll develop and implement narrative design vision: not just the story, characters and world, but also the way in which those elements are brought to life directly in the game
You’ll lead a writer’s room (starting with you!) focused on creating the narrative of a sprawling, live service, multiplayer open-world game
You will lead the development tools, pipelines, and talent required to bring the narrative vision of the game to life
You’ll collaborate with other creative disciplines to realize the IP art, audio and gameplay, and in the longer-term, to extend the IP we create into other media, potentially including comics, shorts, film, television and music
Report to the IP Lead and eventually hire and manage a team of writers
You have 8+ years of experience in a narrative role
You are experienced with the technical and design side of the narrative craft, you’ve managed narrative designers and you’ve worked in-engine. You’re comfortable in Final Draft, but you don’t live there
You have managed a small team of writers to performance: Setting priorities, managing workflow, and giving feedback that helps them flourish as creatives
You’ve collaborated with engineers to develop narrative pipelines to bring content from the page to the game
You’re well-versed in working in, and coaching people on, cross-functional teams
You are an experienced writer. You’re primarily a coach, but able to engage in hands-on tasks without hesitation
You have a lifelong – or recent and very intense – devotion to the science fiction and fantasy genres, and their many permutations. You breathe new life and insight into the beloved tropes of these genres, remixing and reimagining them in ways that an audience has found deeply compelling
You’re aware of big conversations/conventions taking place in sci-fi/fantasy/narrative creative circles – things like Sanderson’s Laws, the rise of LitRPG, the Story Stack, or Harmon’s Story Circle
Special consideration will be given to candidates who are AI/ML-proficient and have begun using (either professionally or on side projects) LMMs to empower writers
To apply for this role, please include (or point us at) two pieces of writing: One where you were the primary author and one where you oversaw the writer(s) who produced it and can discuss the feedback/editing process. Ideal samples will have appeared in-game or were intended to appear in an unreleased game.
Please note - research shows that certain groups of candidates may not apply to jobs unless they meet every single requirement. If you see yourself at Believer but don't check every requirement, we would still love to be in touch with you for current and future opportunities.
