About Our Legal Team

BetterUp’s Legal Team act as talented lawyers, strategic partners, and innovators. We help BetterUp navigate complex, cutting-edge legal challenges—including novel issues in AI and emerging technologies—with clarity, creativity, and a deep sense of responsibility aligned with our core values: Courage, Craftspersonship, Playfulness, Grit, Empathy, and Zest.

We proactively collaborate with all BetterUp teams to thoughtfully assess new products and technologies from ideation to launch. Our lawyers embed deeply with teams across BetterUp. We analyze potential legal and safety risks, develop robust regulatory compliance strategies, and lead governance initiatives to maintain our commitment to ethical innovation.

As the VP of Legal – Product, AI, and Privacy, you will be integral in shaping BetterUp’s responsible growth and innovation strategy, particularly in the rapidly evolving fields of AI, product, and data privacy. You will collaborate closely across Product, Engineering, and Design teams to embed privacy, ethical AI principles, and regulatory compliance into our products and services, ensuring our commitment to transformative, ethical solutions.

What You’ll Do:

Strategic Leadership & AI Guidance

  • Act as the go-to counsel and strategic legal partner for teams focused on AI development and innovations (e.g., BetterUp’s AI-powered coaching tools, industry standards like ChatGPT)

  • Provide strategic legal guidance on AI model development, deployment, transparency, user interactions, and ethical considerations.

Privacy & Data Protection

  • Develop, implement, and oversee privacy-by-design strategies and compliance programs, reviewing engineering and design specifications to ensure legal compliance from ideation through product launch.

  • Provide strategic counsel on global privacy regulations, data governance, and responsible data use, addressing evolving legal frameworks (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA).

Product and Technology Partnership

  • Work closely with Engineering, Product, and Design teams to deeply understand, assess, and mitigate potential legal, safety, and regulatory risks associated with new products and technologies from early development stages through launch.

  • Draft, review, and advise on public-facing descriptions of new products and technologies, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and compliance.

Regulatory & Compliance Strategies

  • Analyze emerging legal, regulatory, and policy frameworks related to AI and privacy, proactively developing compliance strategies alongside business stakeholders.

  • Partner closely with legal and business teams to craft scalable approaches to regulatory compliance, policy alignment, and risk management.

Operational Excellence & Training

  • Help scale BetterUp’s legal infrastructure by creating innovative, efficient processes to support fast-moving Engineering, Product, and Design teams.

  • Conduct targeted trainings for engineers, product managers, and other team members on privacy, AI ethics, and relevant regulatory standards, reinforcing BetterUp’s commitment to responsible innovation.

Thought Leadership & Advocacy

  • Actively represent BetterUp in policy discussions and external forums related to AI ethics, privacy, and technology regulations, positioning BetterUp as a thoughtful industry leader.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Build, mentor, and manage a high-performing legal team specializing in product, AI, and privacy matters, cultivating an inclusive, innovative, and values-driven team culture.

If you have some or all of the following, please apply:

  • JD degree, admitted to practice in at least one U.S. state.

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in legal counseling on technology, privacy, AI, and product development at a leading technology or SaaS company.

  • Proven expertise advising on AI-driven products and technologies, privacy-by-design frameworks, and global data protection standards.

  • Experience working closely with engineering, design, and product teams from product ideation through launch and beyond.

  • Exceptional communication skills, able to translate complex legal and technical concepts clearly and compellingly for diverse audiences, including executive leadership and public-facing communications.

  • Demonstrated experience developing innovative and scalable legal processes, compliance programs, and team training strategies.

  • Ability to thrive and proactively navigate ambiguity, balancing thoughtful risk mitigation with practical business enablement.

  • HR Tech industry & AI experience is a plus but not required

At BetterUp, we compensate our employees fairly for their work. Base salary is determined by job-related experience, education/training, residence location, as well as market indicators. The range below is representative of base salary only and does not include equity, sales bonus plans (when applicable) and benefits. This range may be modified in the future.

The base salary range for this role is $287,000 - $413,000 USD

If you live in New York, the base salary range for this role is: 

  • $330,000 - $413,000: New York City

  • $287,000 - $359,000 USD: Albany, Buffalo, Nassau, Newburgh, Rochester
