Job Summary

Battelle is seeking a Biologist to work in the Emergency Response Branch at the CDC. The Emergency Response Branch (ERB) develops and performs unique laboratory tests to assess chemical and biological exposures during a public health emergency or terrorist event. In a public health emergency, the rapid detection and accurate identification of causative agents can be crucial for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. ERB measures multiple biomarkers in clinical samples using a variety of analytical techniques. The selected applicant will serve as a team member in the Toxins and Drugs of Abuse Laboratory (TDAL) within ERB providing needed analytical testing, method development and validation, technical communication, and data management skills. The selected applicant will have to obtain and maintain a CDC security clearance and a DoD Secret Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and validating immunoassays, microscopy, cell-based assays, receptor binding assays, biosensor, multiplexing, and immunocapture LC-MS/MS methods for detection of small molecules to meet needs of the analytical response laboratory.
  • Transferring developed methods to automation platforms to increase throughput and reduce error.
  • Drafting of technical communication documents including but not limited to: manuscripts, protocols, proposals, logbooks, meeting minutes, project updates, and CLIA documents.
  • Maintaining instruments and keep logs detailing the performance and functioning of laboratory instruments.
  • Obtaining training and providing assistance with projects in other areas that meet the need of the group but remain in the scope of the assignment.
  • Providing branch support for procurement, inventory, sample storage, laboratory automation and exercise/event logistics.
  • Adhering to the universal precautions with regard to the handling of biological samples and biological waste.
  • Adhering to CDC/NCEH/DLS and CLIA 88 guidelines with regard to laboratory protocols and quality control.
  • Adhering to the CDC/NCEH/DLS policy of treating all data as confidential.
  • Adhering to the CDC/NCEH/DLS and Battelle policy of laboratory safety and security.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2-5 years or MS with 0-2 years relevant experience, or PhD with 0-2 years’ experience in biology, biochemistry, or related scientific field
  • Experience with the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of essential scientific instrumentation associated with small molecule screening and analytical assays including, but not limited to, automation platforms, plate readers, multiplexers, biosensors, mass spectrometers, and microscopes.
  • Documented ability to generate and analyze data, prepare written reports of findings, and maintain a laboratory notebook.
  • Ability to document and present technical findings in their area of research.
  • Must be able to work with human blood and urine samples
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory safety
  • Good communication and writing skills
  • Must be eligible and able to obtain a DoD Security Clearance.
