New College Graduate - Software Engineer

The Company

Cape was founded in early 2022 by Palantir and Anduril alums with deep expertise in privacy and national security. While running Palantir’s US national security business, our CEO became passionate about privacy and security on mobile devices. Our mission is to be a force for good in global wireless.

At Cape, we are not just another cellular service provider; we are the architects of a privacy-centric movement that starts with the devices in your pocket. We are building a cellular network that helps citizens, including those responsible for our nation’s security, regain control of their own data.

We believe that where we are, where we go, and whom we are with are among our most personal information and should be kept private. Privacy is not something you achieve by limiting yourself or by doing less, it is a set of features to be built so you can do more. We have raised money from Andreessen Horowitz and other top-tier VCs, and are excited to grow the team.

The Team

We are relentless builders, constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible and bringing to life ideas that have never before existed. Innovation is at the core of everything we do. At Cape, we trust our team to deliver greatness and empower them to make a profound impact. As a member of our team, you will collaborate seamlessly with our diverse group of talented engineers and other team members, enjoying dynamic interactions with colleagues from across the organization.

The Role

We are seeking new college graduates to join our team of software engineers working on backend platforms, full-stack web and mobile apps, and forward deployed engineering teams. You'll learn from some of the brightest minds in the industry, with experience across successful startups like Palantir and Anduril, as well as leading tech giants like Google and AWS.

As a new graduate, you'll be delivering real features into production while developing new skills on the job. Make the transition from campus life to a dynamic Series B startup where we prioritize action and swift iteration. We believe in shipping fast and refining continually, delivering incremental value to our customers and leveraging their feedback to grow both our people and our company.

Our mission is to bring privacy and security to the most essential computing device of our generation: the cell phone. As the most ubiquitous technology in human history, it's crucial to protect it from those who seek to exploit it. Help us prevent malicious actors from taking over personal devices and invading lives. Together, we'll safeguard vulnerable individuals—like grandparents and others who may be at greater risk.

Be part of a team that's making a real difference. If you're passionate about privacy, security, and combating threats in the digital world, we'd love to have you on board.

Here are some ways you’ll make an impact (also Outcomes of the role)

  • Depending on your strengths, you might be building backend services in Go, doing full-stack development with React/Typescript, or creating iOS/Android mobile apps with Kotlin (Jetpack Compose) / Swift (SwiftUI).

  • Participate in code reviews, both giving and receiving direct feedback.

  • Provide support for triaging issues/bugs with your teams' products.

  • Talk directly to customers to understand and develop innovative solutions for real life problems

  • Work directly with other teams to build and ship high-impact features in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

  • Your day-to-day will involve applying a privacy/security-first mindset while working on projects like:

Are you the candidate we are looking for?

You have/are:

  • Ability to understand and translate product requirements to system design.

  • Solid foundation in data structures and algorithms in one or more programming languages.

    • You’re fluent enough in a programming language to translate requirements to working solutions.  You don't shy away from open-ended and/or ambiguous tasks that require you to research existing library support and make a well-considered decision.

  • Strong communication skills

    • You value input from others and will modify your approach as appropriate.

    • You back up your decisions with data, and as such you have "strong opinions, weakly held", which means that you will incorporate new data into your decision-making process.

    • You embrace our company's core value of overcommunication as a way to move fast and drive consensus from a diverse group of stakeholders.

  • Flexible and adaptable in a fast paced environment with a strong bias for action

Backend-specific competencies:

  • Distributed systems and building robust backend services

  • Owning the entire software lifecycle from requirements, implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring

  • Basic database and networking knowledge

  • Cloud infrastructure experience

Mobile-specific competencies:

  • You’re more than just a “frontend programmer.”

    • You are genuinely interested in building user experiences

    • You’re not (necessarily) a visual designer but you hold strong opinions on visual design

    • You see the app flow at a higher level and consider practical implications like:

      • How will the user feel in each use case? Is it likely to cause frustration, fear, delight? The UI should be appropriate for each case

      • What impression does this UI give of the company? Does it make us seem haphazard, playful, professional? How do we make the app “feel” tech-savvy, secure?

    • You have experience not just programming an app but launching and marketing it too, and you know what makes an app successful (i.e. desirable) to the user?

  • Building user interaction involving elements such as:

    • Animation

    • Accessibility

    • Dynamic layout

    • I18n/Localization

    • Permissions

  • You have strong knowledge of your platform (iOS/Android) and can leverage built-in APIs or technologies. You can suggest new features and applications of these technologies that maximize our usefulness while minimizing development time/effort.

Bonus Points: (Some nice to haves for these roles)

  • Software engineering experience from previous roles, internships, research projects, etc.

  • Apps launched to App Store/Play Store

  • Mobile/Web: An eye for design and UX

  • Privacy focused work

  • Open source contributions

  • AWS experience

Our Culture

  • We are builders, and we choose to spend our time building things that matter. Many of our people have backgrounds in Defense Tech as well as the defense and intelligence community. We build to win.

  • We hire excellent people, give them outsized responsibility, and trust them to execute at a high level. Everyone here has a track record of solving hard problems throughout their careers.

  • We believe that personal privacy and national security interests are not inherently at odds, and can be reconciled via strong technology.

  • We believe that companies exist to build awesome things and take care of their people. Our benefits reflect that– top-tier health care, 401(k) matching, and a generous vacation policy (that we actually use).

  • We hire candidates of any race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital or family status, disability, Veteran status, and any other status. Achieving diversity across these categories will serve to make our company stronger and our product better.
