Job Summary:

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) will serve as a key member of the patient care team in an ambulatory setting. This position will work closely with providers across multiple specialties as well as with other clinical and administrative staff to deliver an exceptional patient experience that contributes to positive health outcomes for patients and a work culture of kindness, inclusion, integrity, accountability, and excellence.

Job Responsibilities:

Essential Duties

  • Greet and interact with patients, visitors, vendors, and all faculty and staff in a courteous, helpful, professional, and ethical manner.
  • Prepare patients for their visit including:
  • Pre-visit organization of information required for an efficient in-office experience, performingpatient escort and rooming functions (taking vital signs, medication. reconciliation, accuratedocumentation of chief complaint, updating history as requested, updating EMR (EPIC) asrequired).
  • Providing instructions to patients in a manner that facilitates efficient patient safety andstandard operations for the practice.
  • Assists patients as needed with walking, dressing, collecting and processing specimens andpoint of care testing, preparing for exam, etc. Serve as a chaperone in the exam room asrequested.
  • Assist physicians with examinations, procedures, and department specific therapies.
  • Perform phlebotomy duties and point-of-care tests such as urinalysis, and pregnancy tests.
  • Prepare and label collected specimens, and ensure timely delivery of specimens toappropriate designation.
  • Ensure proper labs are drawn and documented via EPIC. Assist in troubleshooting missing labsfrom EPIC as instructed by supervisor.
  • Enter orders in EPIC as required
  • Assist providers or other clinical staff with in-office procedures as requested.
  • Manage a smooth clinic flow by assessing and anticipating physician schedules and usingclinical space effectively.
  • Identify patients using at least two identifiers.
  • Notify physicians and nurses of emergencies and perform first aid.
  • Collaborate with Front Desk staff to expedite the delivery of quality patient care, provide an excellentpatient experience and promote patient flow. Duties include:
  • Manage and track the patient flow from arrival until exam room departure using an EMR system, including welcoming and informing patients of any delays
  • Serve as a liaison between physicians and other individuals such as patients
  • Prepare and maintain medical charts
  • Copy and mail requests for medical records ensuring HIPAA compliance
  • Perform additional check-out functions such as scheduling, referrals, and additional tasks as needed.
  • Answer telephone calls and take accurate phone messages.
  • Drive awareness of pre and post-visit processes and self-services in place to minimize density and unnecessary patient-staff contact.
  • Anticipate and fulfill patient, visitor, provider, and colleague needs within scope of practice/training/education.
  • Maintain diagnostic equipment, perform QC testing and maintain supporting documentation.
  • Perform point of care testing as trained.
  • Maintain daily refrigerator/freezer logs, monthly AED logs, and other QA logs as trained.
  • Contribute ideas for improving practice workflows to team members, providers, and management.
  • Take initiative to resolve patient safety and patient experience concerns within the scope of practice/ training/education.
  • Follow and adhere to Infection Prevention & Control guidelines
  • Create an environment of safety by utilizing practice standards.
  • Process, sterilize, and organize instruments daily.
  • Ensures the overall condition of the treatment room is clean and safe according to practice standards. Escalates any issues as appropriate. Ensures inventory and adequate supply of personal protective equipment and other hygiene products in the patient treatment area. Notifies management when supplies are low and need re-stocking.
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality according to HIPAA requirements at all times.
  • Keep current on all organizational, practice, and patient privacy policies (e.g. infection control, HIPAA) and required trainings.
  • Maintain a safe and secure work environment by following all OSHA, EH&S, and public safety policies and guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned within professional scope of practice/training/education.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalency and graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • CMA must be certified by a credentialing body.
  • Current BCLS/AED certification required.
  • Must demonstrate strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to perform across multi-disciplinary and/or specialties while maintaining high productivity and a professional and service-oriented demeanor.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a culturally diverse staff and patient/family population demonstrating tact, respect, and sensitivity.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, interpersonal skills, and a strong ability to deescalate stressful situations.
  • Must be an engaged team member demonstrating collaboration, inclusion, reliability, punctuality, and adaptability to new and changing situations.
  • Basic proficiency in computer skills including, but not limited to, Electronic Health Systems, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Email systems, etc.
  • Must be a motivated individual with a positive mindset and exceptional work ethic.
  • Will provide coverage as requested throughout practices (multiple sites and flexible schedule).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Degree or additional academic coursework is preferred.
  • Previous medical assisting experience in an outpatient setting is preferred.
  • Proficiency of OSHA standards including disposal of biohazard waste is preferred.
  • Preferred multi-specialty experience in a high volume setting preferred.
  • Prior EMR experience, EPIC preferred.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00 - $28.85 per hour
