Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Position Summary:
This position is essential for the direct care of the residents living in the Kansas Veterans Home and required by regulation. This direct care position will be responsible for providing assistance with activities of daily living for residents in the long term care living facility and other areas as assigned. The incumbent of this position has access to protected health information (PHI) under the provisions of the Health Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Supports residents with activities of daily living (ADL) by assisting with oral care, dressing, bathing, toileting, transporting, turning, and nutrition. Performs related routine activities such as changing linens and administering simple therapeutic treatments or procedures. These tasks are performed according to established procedures to provide quality of care for each resident. Reports immediately, to the charge nurse, anything unusual regarding residents. Answers call lights and provides assistance. Obtains and records vital signs, height and weight as requested. Turns and repositions every 2 hours. Measures and records input and output. Collects specimens. Places and removes protective or assistive devices. Checks all assigned residents at end of shift to make sure they are clean, dry and comfortable. Completes required documentation of ADL’s. Keeps bedside and room clean and clear of clutter to provide aesthetic and safe environment. Puts away supplies, linens, etc. Completes special assignments as requested by the charge nurse.

At the time of appointment, must possess a current certification by the Kansas Department of Aging as a Certified Nurse Aide pursuant to K.A.R. 28-39-165.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ability to effectively communicate. Ability to function effectively under stress. Ability to relate to residents with empathy and understanding and to maintain a caring attitude. Must be able to identify basic differences in situations, as in an adverse reaction to medication, and determine the actions which need to be taken. Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.

As authorized by the 2018 Kansas Legislature, effective July 1, 2018, K.S.A. 75-4362 is amended to designate all positions with the Kansas Commission on Veterans’ Affairs office, to include both the Kansas Soldiers’ Home and Kansas Veterans’ Home as Safety Sensitive positions and subject to the drug testing program.
