The Chief of Staff reports to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at GRAIL. This strategic position ensures the Medical Affairs team is focused at the highest level to deliver strategically and operationally by amplifying the leadership reach of the Chief Medical Officer, as well as directs. This pivotal role requires a natural ability to build strong, trusting internal partnerships across the organization and drive progress on key initiatives, cross-functional projects, and effective communications on behalf of the CMO. As the Medical Affairs team’s "trusted counsel and representative" this role will work closely with the direct reports and within the organization to efficiently communicate initiatives, prioritization and decision-making. This role speeds us towards the next decade of success. This requires a highly resourceful leader who thrives in a fast-moving, complex environment requiring strong emotional intelligence, self-direction, and comfort with ambiguity in a fast-changing industry. A background in Medical Affairs is desired. Strategy experience with demonstrated operational experience would be a strong fit. MBA preferred.

You will:

  • Business Operations Leadership:

  • This position encompasses three primary accountabilities:

  • Runs and improves the business cadence (strategic planning, budgeting, workforce planning, QBR prep), sets and improves processes, monitors execution and drives accountability and visibility of progress against goals and objectives.
  • Works closely with Regions and Global functions to provide a consistent strategic narrative across initiatives.
  • Proactively identifies gaps and issues across the organization and recommends solutions/programs to address them.
  • Drives the Medical Affairs leadership team to clear, efficient, and accountable decision-making.
  • Be a sounding board to the leadership team and ensure strategy, goals, and priorities are communicated effectively and cascaded to the broader organization. Responsible for framing of communication needs and strategy for key messages related to strategies and projects.

  • Independent Leadership of Medical Affairs Initiated Projects:

  • Leads confidential and time-sensitive projects and issue resolution when necessary.
  • Provides leadership for large scale strategic projects across the organization.

  • Coordination And Orchestration Of Commitments Of The Medical Affairs Organization:

  • This role is critical to effective running of the Medical Affairs function.
  • The incumbent needs to understand the breadth of the projects within the Medical Affairs team’s purview to ensure effective orchestration of competing and urgent priorities and may represent the Medical Affairs team with Medical Affairs Leadership, ELT, customers, and critical stakeholders.
  • They are responsible for ensuring that key meetings are effective and achieve objectives.
  • They will work to ensure coordination of participants and meeting logistics and also ensure that the meeting achieves stated goals, and as needed, assist Medical Affairs in preparation to facilitate the meeting.
  • This may also involve working with meeting participants to help with quality of content and preparation.
  • They provide insightful, data- driven recommendations to the Medical Affairs team and operate with tact, diplomacy, and persistence.
  • They support the needs of the leadership team in raising critical issues with the Chief Medical Officer and receiving needed responses, guidance, and decisions.
  • They may write and at times deliver compelling presentations regarding Medical Affairs and/or GRAIL, and its programs to a variety of internal and external constituencies.

  • Requirements:

  • This role provides privileged access to the inner workings of the company and to highly sensitive information. The successful candidate will be discrete, high-energy, agile-minded, strategic, proactive, a direct communicator, highly organized and committed to the vision and values of the company.

  • In addition, the following standards will generally define the successful candidate:

  • 20+ years of experience
  • Bachelor's in Commercial, Business or Science highly recommended. MBA preferred.
  • Preferably, has been involved in Medical, Product Management, or Strategy in Life Sciences.
  • Consulting background in strategy, communications, management, medical or business operations is preferred.
  • Smart, strong analytical skills and ability; outstanding project management, execution, and business acumen
The expected, full-time, annual base pay scale for this position is $196,000 - 270,000. Actual base pay will consider skills, experience, and location.

Based on the role, colleagues may be eligible to participate in an annual bonus plan tied to company and individual performance, or an incentive plan. We also offer a long-term incentive plan to align company and colleague success over time.
