Scientist I/II, Organic Chemistry & Peptide Synthesis

We are looking to add a Scientist I/II to our growing Chemistry team. Our ideal candidate must have a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry with a focus in peptide chemistry and solid-phase peptide synthesis automation. Reporting to the Associate Director, Chemistry, this individual will contribute to drug discovery programs enabled by our computational/medicinal chemistry and biology teams. Specifically, this individual will design and synthesize macrocyclic peptides using a combination of solution and semi-automated peptide synthesis, contribute to medicinal chemistry discussions, and develop new synthetic methodologies to further develop our drug discovery platform.


This position requires the ability to work fully onsite at Circle’s South San Francisco location, Monday – Friday. What You'll Do:
  • ·Design, synthesize, and characterize small molecules and peptide macrocycles
  • ·Utilize a combination of solution-phase and automated solid-phase methodologies
  • ·Work with medicinal chemists to identify and prioritize target molecule designs
  • ·Collaborate with colleagues to plan efficient synthetic routes and workflows
  • ·Collaborate with colleagues in chemistry and in research operations to plan efficient synthetic routes and purification workflows
  • ·Identify and integrate cutting-edge chemistry to expand platform capabilities
  • ·Maintain an in-depth knowledge of modern organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and project-related scientific literature
  • ·Coordinate with CRO chemistry teams
  • ·Maintain a safe work environment
  • ·Actively contribute to and support the success of our Circle Team with enthusiasm and dedication


About You:
  • PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry with at least 2 years of relevant post-doc or industry experience, or a BS/MS with 8+ years of industry experience and a strong track record of research accomplishments. Candidates with additional years of experience may be considered for a Scientist II position
  • Experience and expertise in the use of modern synthetic organic techniques for small molecules. Experience in peptide synthesis, peptidomimetics, and natural product synthesis preferred
  • Experience in medicinal chemistry and/or library synthesis
  • Conversant with current literature
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot synthetic routes and difficult chemistries
  • High level of creativity, knowledge of reaction mechanisms, and strong synthetic problem-solving skills, including identifying multiple synthetic approaches to a given compound
  • Adept in structural determination using NMR and Mass Spectral techniques, as well as a strong background in analytical techniques in LC-MS and purification methods
  • Possess a strong desire to learn new techniques and incorporate new methodologies
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, ChemDraw, MestReNova and Mac/PC operating systems
  • Excellent at maintaining laboratory records of scientific findings
  • Excellent record of maintaining laboratory safety standards
  • Self-motivated and independent with the ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Ability to deliver high-quality outcomes within tight deadlines

$109,000 - $142,000 a year
The anticipated salary range for candidates who work in South San Francisco, CA at the Scientist I level is $109,000 to $128,000. The anticipated salary range for candidates who work in South San Francisco, CA at the Scientist II level is $121,000 to $142,000. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc.
