The Bureau of Landscape Architecture provides design services for playgrounds, parks, streetscapes, bike lanes, green infrastructure and urban design, from planning through construction. Working closely with the community, our designers create open space that is safe, equitable and beautiful.

Public Works currently has a vacancy for a Landscape Architectural Assistant I (5260) within the Bureau of Landscape Architecture.

Job Description

Under supervision, as a Landscape Architectural Assistant I, you will perform entry level landscape architectural work in the office and field with the preparation of landscape architectural services for city parks, playgrounds, recreational areas, civic spaces, streetscapes, boulevards and roadways. Additionally, you will assist in the preparation of conceptual through final construction documents for projects, review construction in the field, and prepare for and attend community meetings.

Important and Essential Duties:
Your duties as a Landscape Architectural Assistant I may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prepare landscape architectural drawings that include all site work. Prepare designs for review by various stakeholders, boards and permitting agencies, and develop construction documents of landscape architectural scope of work for the project.
  • Prepare 3D models and renderings for landscape architectural projects for client and community presentations.
  • Conduct preliminary studies by checking site conditions, obtaining planning data and information and taking field measurements to document existing site conditions.
  • Assist in the preparation of contract specifications and cost estimates for the construction of streetscape projects.
  • Assist in preparation of bid documents, construction administration, including submittals, RFIs and construction coordination.
  • Assist in routine field observations of projects under construction to assure conformance with plans and specifications.
  • Assist in the preparation of written reports, summaries and correspondence related to landscape architecture scope for the project.
  • Coordinate work with other design staff assigned to the project and attend regular progress meetings.

Qualifications

Education:
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Landscape Architecture or a Landscape Architecture related field (such as Environmental Design) from an accredited college or university.

AND

License:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

Substitution:
A professional degree in Landscape Architecture (Bachelor of Landscape Architecture or Master of Landscape Architecture) from an accredited college or university may substitute for the required education.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT
Valid Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role. 

Desirable Qualifications:
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD.
  • Proficiency in presentation graphics programs such as ADOBE Creative Suite (including In-Design, Illustrator and Photo-Shop).
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and rendering software such as Sketch-Up, Rhino, Lumion, or Enscape.
  • Experience and interest in working on public open space projects.
  • Experience in playground evaluation or design.
  • Proficiency in GIS (Geographic Information System).

The selection process will include an evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Depending on the number of applicants, the department may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate the qualifications of candidates. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the department will move forward in the recruitment process.

Minimum Qualification Supplemental Questionnaire (MQSQ):
Candidates may be required to complete an MQSQ as part of the employment application. This MQSQ is designed to obtain specific information regarding an applicant's experience in relation to the Minimum Qualifications (MQ) for this position. The MQSQ will be used to evaluate if the applicant possesses the required minimum qualifications.

Portfolio Evaluation: 
Candidates deemed qualified will be provided specific instructions to submit a portfolio. This includes the submittal of the best examples of a candidate’s work, which highlights their design and technical skills from their portfolio. Failure to submit PDF portfolio examples or link to an online portfolio may result in a lower score.
