The NYC Department of Probation (DOP) is a world leader in working creatively and effectively engaging with people under court-mandated community supervision. DOP is seeking to hire (1) Agency Attorney to serve as an Associate General Counsel who will report to the General Counsel. Under direction, with wide latitude for independent judgment and unreviewed action and decision will be working in the General Law Unit. The Associate General Counsel responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Conduct legal research and provide legal guidance to DOP personnel on a range of operations such as liability and risk assessments and analysis, enforcement and administration of acts, rules, laws and regulations.
- Negotiate, draft, review and process complex or highly technical memoranda of understanding, contracts, leases and other agreements.
- Review and draft complex, important or highly technical policies, procedures, and operational documents.
- Recommend statutory and regulatory revisions related to agency issues.
- Research and prepare briefs, legal opinions, affidavits, and memoranda of law.
- Respond to Subpoenas and Freedom of Information Law requests
- Prepare position statements in response to Charges of Discrimination filed with federal, state and local governmental entities.
- Act as a liaison with Agency executives and other governmental bodies and law enforcement officials.
- Serve as liaison to the New York City Law Department on litigation matters
1. Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
2. One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
3. Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).
Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:
To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
