The Legal Affairs Division serves as the in-house legal department for DOF, providing professional and comprehensive legal advice and services supporting a full range of city tax and other revenue-related matters. Legal Affairs Division attorneys and staff handle various legal issues, including real property taxes and exemptions, business income and excise taxes, collections, parking violations, treasury, land registry, Conciliation Bureau conferences, FOIL, and employment law.
The Legal Affairs Division's Information Law and Legal Counsel Unit seeks an enthusiastic, self-motivated agency attorney intern to be part of our team handling a variety of legal counsel, administrative law functions and legal procedures for cannabis enforcement. Under close supervision and direction, you will work with us on the following:
- With supervision, perform legal research and draft memoranda, legal responses, policy statements and other documents. Assist in drafting and reviewing legal letters, notices and other communications.
- Assist the Sheriff's counsel in preparing required notifications and documentation for legal and enforcement compliance matters. Review cannabis enforcement cases and store reopening paperwork for legal compliance.
- Handle electronic case tracking and management. Create and update tracking documents, maintain required records for compliance with legal requirements. Prepare and provide requested reports, records and documents for the Sheriff's Counsel.
- Research and draft responses to claims or actions filed against the agency as needed. Under close direction, serve as liaison with the Law Department on agency litigation matters. Assist with FOIL matters as needed.
- With direction, attorney intern may prepare petitions or cases for administrative hearings.
- Participate in projects and handling matters in other areas as determined by the General Counsel or Division manager.

Graduation from an accredited United States law school as defined in the Rules of the New York Court of Appeals (Sections 520.3 or 520.5) or admission to the New York State Bar.
