The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe, and clean by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. DSNY is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, with nearly 10,000 employees, 59 district garages, and a fleet of more than 5,000 trucks, cars, and other types of equipment. The Department clears litter, snow, and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets.
DSNY is seeking a Deputy Medical Director for the Department’s Medical Division. The Division includes an occupational Health Care Facility (HCF) comprised of a medical staff and uniformed sanitation officers engaged in monitoring the medical condition of more than 8,000 employees. It provides oversight of medical care management for employees on medical leave or restricted duty as a result of an illness or work-related injury. The HCF also conducts pre-employment medical examinations to ensure that candidates for the job of Sanitation Worker are fit to perform the tasks involved, including holding a commercial driver’s license.
Reporting to the Medical Director, the Deputy Medical Director will manage the occupational health care facility and work closely with the Division’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Unit, Employee Assistance Unit, and Medical Records Unit.
The responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Oversee a staff of approximately 12 physicians, five nurses, and two medical assistants.
- Provide administrative supervision to ensure that existing DSNY policies and procedures are carried out. Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight of subordinates' work assignments, consultation, etc. Actively work to promote and recognize performance.
- Closely monitor the overall status of the HCF, identify problem areas, and take corrective action as needed.
- Serve as a Medical Review Officer for DSNY’s drug and alcohol testing program.
- Educate staff within the Medical Division and throughout DSNY about health-related topics, agency policy, and relevant regulations.
- Work collaboratively with all levels of Medical Division staff clinical professionals, administrative professionals, and members of the uniformed workforce as well as other DSNY personnel.
- Provide input on internal policy formation as it relates to the Medical Division. On an ongoing basis, evaluate criteria for medical leave, authorization issuance, and medical duty assignments.
- Plan and develop new initiatives.
- Perform patient assessments.
- Support the Medical Director as needed.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned.
1. Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York plus valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in an approved medical specialty; and four years of medical practice including one year of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity; or
2. A combination of education and/or experience equivalent to that listed in "1" above. However, all candidates must have a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York, and one year of medical practice in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
