Community Assisted Response & Engagement (CARE) is seeking applicants for the Emergency 9-1-1 Communications Dispatchers II position. A competitive applicant would possess strong multi-tasking skills, knowledge of counseling, crisis management, the legal system, and social service agencies and the services they provide. These skills combined with extensive on the job training would be used to perform daily job duties and resolve most work problems. Here is more about this role’s main priorities:• Answers emergency and non-emergency calls for service and simultaneously enters this information into the computer using a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System.• Calms, negotiates, advises and provides instructions to callers to obtain accurate and essential information necessary to establish priority and initiate a timely response to emergency calls while providing excellent customer service.• Dispatch police units as appropriate via a trunked radio system; anticipate problems and respond to units as necessary.• Continually updates information as it is received, enters into computer and updates units as to new information or instructions including follow up and updated status of calls.• Experience handling multiple calls at a time and prioritizing them as a 911 DispatcherYour effectiveness in this role will depend on your ability to:• Respect people’s lived experience and reflect a deep understanding of race, social justice, and equity in your interactions and work.• Be passionate about serving the community and championing for underserved and underrepresented vulnerable populations in your work.• Stay informed and knowledgeable about evolving changes, trends as it relates to public safety to ensure relevancy and accuracy in imparting information to the community.• Commit to teamwork and coordinate varying perspectives and work with diverse stakeholders to identify collaborative solutionCurrent active employment status as a City of Seattle 9-1-1 Communications Operator or related classification.OrTwo years’ experience performing 9-1-1 Emergency Dispatch duties in a high volume, fast- paced, high stress emergency services communications center environment.(or a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background).Additional Information:Completion of training requirements to operate zone radio as well as primary and secondary phone operations.Work Environment / Physical Demands:• Work is usually performed in an office environment.• Work overtime, nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.• Work is confined to immediate work area and requires continuous staffing.• Work involves sensitive contact with members of the public who may be hostile, emotional, unstable or physically or mentally distraught, or in crisis.Applications are reviewed after the posting closes.
