Clinical Laboratory Scientist - Trainee

Overview
Exciting paid training opportunity to become a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at Dartmouth Health! This opportunity is open to both current Dartmouth Health employees and external candidates. Selected individuals need to apply and be accepted into the Weber State University Medical Laboratory Science associate’s degree program. Over the course of a year, trainees complete their classwork online and their clinical skills training at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. At the conclusion of the program Trainees will sit for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) exam and transition to a Clinical Laboratory Scientist role at Dartmouth Health.

Responsibilities
Purpose:
Trains to become a Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Learns to perform laboratory tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Year-long sponsored training provided with online classwork through Weber State University and clinical skills training in the DHMC laboratory.
Responsibilities:
  • Learns to perform the full range of procedures to perform laboratory tests.
  • Learns to identify when sample, instrument, and/or procedural problems exist.
  • Recognizes critical test results and execute appropriate notification protocol.
  • Attends online courses and maintains satisfactory academic progress.
  • Required to exhibit proficiency of laboratory techniques and pass competency exams.
  • Learns to operate and perform routine maintenance on a variety of lab equipment.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
  • Learns to identify and report safety issues.
  • Demonstrates professional behavior and comfort in a hospital setting.
  • Participates in laboratory improvement projects.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
 College-level coursework in General Studies, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Chemistry required.
 Experience as a Laboratory Assistant or Phlebotomist preferred.
 Eligible for acceptance into Weber State University’s Medical Laboratory Technician Associate’s Degree program.


Required Licensure/Certifications

Required Licensure/Certification Skills:  At the end of the training period, take and pass the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) exam.
