About the Role

We are looking for a Payroll & Benefits Manager who is a master of processing payroll from start to finish and across many geographies and tax regimes. In this role, you will support stakeholders ranging from employees (our first priority) to payroll and benefits providers around the world. You’ll work alongside immediate teammates in People Operations while maintaining close relationships with our Finance team to ensure we’re providing the best experience to employees while maintaining the highest business standards in our payroll practices and audits.   

You will focus 75% on Payroll

  • Manage all payroll related functions: data input, time and labor processing, compliance, reporting, administration, and vendor management
  • Partner with key stakeholders for ensuring accurate entry of employee salaries, reported hours on timesheets, commissions, bonuses, severance pay, garnishment requests, and deductions and withholdings for benefits, taxes and 401(k) contributions, and calculating leave and disability payments.
  • Ensure timely and accurate payroll cycles across all markets, including the US, UK, India, and Canada in addition to several other european countries supported by a Global Professional Employer Organization. 
  • Ensure an audit program is in place to review each cycle’s reports for accuracy while proactively managing variance that could occur monthly, quarterly, or annually.
  • Manage third-party providers to quickly resolve issues and discrepancies, while remaining the primary point of contact for employees 
  • Create processes and deadlines that you will hold stakeholders accountable to.
  • Collaborate with Finance functions to streamline processes, ensure operating efficiency and accuracy between systems.
  • Support the Finance team by running reports upon request and assisting with various audit needs.
  • Ensure payroll tax & state registration compliance for a remote workforce
  • Be the expert for payroll tax requirements and payroll-related laws such as FLSA, federal and state payroll taxes, IRS-related requirements for pre-and post-tax earnings and deductions, and other mandatory compliance and reporting requirements

You will focus 25% on Benefits 

  • Reconcile employee status changes, new hires, terminations, benefits elections, and payroll data across HRIS system (Bob), benefits platform (BSwift) and payroll systems (ADP WorkforceNow + Global providers)
  • Monitor file feed status health to ensure benefits changes are accurately flowing to payroll.
  • Process deductions and contributions to benefits accounts (e.g. FSA, HSA, 401k, commuter)

The Expectations

In your first 30 days, you will develop a strong understanding of our current processes and organizational structure. You will meet with key stakeholders across the organization, in to better understand how the role will work with other functions. You will review and provide feedback on our current payroll processes while learning about the nuances of our benefits administration globally. You will start to identify areas for improvement in our payroll and benefits operations and make recommendations on improvements. In addition, you will begin to build relationships with our external payroll & benefits vendors.

In your first 60 days, you will take ownership of all payroll cycles, both domestically and internationally. You will start to become the go-to person for all payroll and benefits-administration -related inquiries at Cockroach Labs. You will start implementing new processes to address the more immediate needs of the function.

After 3 months, you'll be fully integrated into the team and will have created a roadmap of projects to make Cockroach Labs best in class. You will work alongside the People Ops, Accounting, and Finance teams to start implementing redesigned systems, workflows, and relationships with key stakeholders to fully build out an internationally scalable payroll function. You will have built key relationships so that you are the go-to subject matter expert in your field.

You Have

  • 8 years related business work experience in full-cycle global payroll processing
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) Preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong interpersonal skills for interacting with vendors and stakeholders at all levels
  • Experience of adopting a strategic view of payroll with aim to enhance the employee experience
  • Proven experience of owning a global payroll cycle from start to finish in a fast-paced, high growth organization
  • Analytical in nature with strong project management skills and excellent attention to detail 
  • Organizational and planning skills, including being able to work reliably and efficiently under demanding deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Expertise with ADP Workforce Now required

The annual anticipated base salary range for U.S. candidates for this role is USD $138,000 to $182,400, plus commission if a sales role. We set standard ranges for all U.S.-based roles based on function, level, and geographic location, benchmarked against similar stage growth companies. In order to be compliant with local legislation, as well as to provide greater transparency to candidates, we share salary ranges on all job postings regardless of desired hiring location.  Actual salaries may vary and fall outside of this range depending on factors such as a candidate’s qualifications, geographic location, skills, experience, and competencies. In addition, we are often open to a wide variety of profiles, and recognize that the person we hire may be less experienced (or more senior) than this job description as posted. Salary is one component of the Cockroach Labs’ total rewards package, which includes stock options, health insurance, life and disability insurance, funds towards professional development resources, flexible PTO, paid holidays, and parental leave, to name a few! Salaries for candidates outside the U.S. will vary based on local compensation structures.
