About the Team 

The GenAI Studio is an internal incubator at College Board that launched in January 2024. Through the Studio, College Board is investing time and resources for Generative AI ideation. The Studio is responsibly experimenting with AI internally with staff, in the development of our products, and even in AP classrooms. Our rapid prototyping and experimentation help us make informed decisions about AI in our broader portfolio of offerings. The Studio is comprised of a diverse, cross-functional team of strategists, technologists, and product managers at College Board committed to solving the most impactful and interesting problems arising with AI. Across the team we divide the work around strategic enablement within our organization, transformative AI innovations that are both internally and externally facing and advancing AI Literacy in the education space.

About the Opportunity  

As the Engineering Manager for the GenAI Studio at College Board, you will lead a team of 4+ software engineers and data scientists to develop innovative AI solutions that enhance student learning and streamline internal processes. Your role is crucial in creating secure, impactful AI prototypes that align with College Board's strategic goals. You will collaborate closely with product and design teams, ensuring seamless integration of AI initiatives. Your leadership bridges technical and business needs, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment that drives the successful adoption of AI technologies across the organization. 

In this role, you will:

Provide technical leadership to the team (40%)

  • Sort through options for solutioning, leveraging your own technical expertise
  • Continue to learn and keep abreast of developments in Generative AI software, sharing that knowledge within the team to support best practices
  • Provide guidance to team members as they solution and build prototypes, occasionally working directly in the code yourself and review code submitted by team members
  • Manage scope and actively work against developing technical debt
  • Monitor and manage costs, working with internal resources to optimize the cost and performance of applications
  • Approach every feature with a security-sensitive perspective

Build a highly engaged, and high-performing team (30%)

  • Cultivate norms that support strong communication, a positive working culture, and an engaged team
  • Define ceremonies that support your high-performing Agile team, while maximizing productive work time
  • Actively cultivate the superpowers of team members and leverage these to develop products
  • Manage work culture to ensure the mission and operating principles of College Board and the GenAI Studio are consistently recognized and utilized to promote a productive and fair work environment

Interface with business partners and technology colleagues (30%)

  • Develop deep understanding of the business needs your team serves to provide thought leadership and consistent messaging around the work of the team
  • Manage scope and workload, working with product owners to deliver the most valuable work first
  • Provide subject matter expertise and architectural consultation to other teams experimenting with GenAI applications and support with resources from your own team as appropriate

About You

You have:

  • 5+ years’ experience leading full stack software development for compute-intensive, data-heavy applications
  • Proven track record managing engineering teams in an Agile environment
  • Experience delivering projects involving AI, machine learning, LLMs, or data science; ability to clearly distinguish the roles of engineers vs. data scientists
  • Hands-on expertise with modern cloud technologies, ideally within our stack including AWS, React, TypeScript, Python and LLM frameworks
  • Strong communication, diplomacy, and stakeholder management skills; ability to navigate complex orgs and build consensus across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Knowledge of crossover/interdependencies between infrastructure tasks and development activities
  • Visionary yet pragmatic leadership style; track record for championing ideas that gain traction even with initial resistance
  • A passion for delivering impactful, high-quality products that help students succeed
  • Authorization to work in the United States

The hiring range for a new employee in this position is $140,000 to $170,000.
