Role Overview

We are seeking a Business License Manager to lead our company registration and tax authority setup efforts across the U.S. for Sales and Use Tax (SUT) compliance. This role will be responsible for registering companies with state and local tax authorities, managing tax portals, and developing a comprehensive internal knowledge resource for training future team members. With your detailed knowledge of tax portals, registration processes, and experience interacting with regulators, you will build and manage the growing business licensing function at Commenda.

This position requires strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to document and streamline processes. Over time, you will hire and mentor a team of Business License Associates, positioning this as a leadership role within the company.

Key Responsibilities

Own the end-to-end registration process for U.S. Sales and Use Tax with state and local tax authorities across multiple jurisdictions.

• Develop and maintain a comprehensive internal knowledge base that documents registration processes, tax portal usage, and account setup procedures for various states and local authorities.
• Ensure timely and accurate registrations, meeting all filing deadlines, and avoiding penalties or interest charges.
• Collaborate with tax authorities and portal administrators to resolve registration issues and maintain accurate records of correspondence and filings.
• Serve as the primary contact for tax portal administrators, speaking with regulators and portal administrators to troubleshoot and escalate issues as needed.
• Develop and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for tax registrations, ensuring they are easily accessible for internal use and training.
• Train and mentor junior team members on best practices for registration, ensuring consistency and accuracy in all compliance workflows.
• Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy in registration activities.
• Stay updated on relevant state and local regulations, trends, and announcements to ensure that the team operates in full compliance with the latest tax rules.
• Over time, build and lead a team of Business License Associates to scale the registration function as Commenda grows.
• Communicate ongoing status and any blockers to senior management, ensuring transparency and timely resolution of issues.
• Provide support to internal teams with technical issues related to registration and tax portals.

• 2+ years of experience in Sales and Use Tax registration and compliance, with deep expertise in U.S. state and local tax portals.
• Strong experience in interacting with tax authorities, resolving registration issues, and managing relationships with portal administrators.
• Demonstrated ability to create detailed documentation and internal resources for training and process standardization.
• Familiarity with state rules and regulations governing Sales and Use Tax, and a strong understanding of registration requirements.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and concisely.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
• Experience in identifying and implementing process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.
• Self-motivated and able to work independently in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment.
