Full-time, Salary

Salary Range: $52,104.00 - $79,705.60/yr

Job Summary

Manages strategic communications at the direction of the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) Communications Director. Supports DHHS-wide communications activity, developing communications vision, external/internal communications, media relations, social media, graphic design, press conference coordination, coordination with other departments and the county executive’s team.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage Strategic Communications - Collaboratively manage communications activities across the department. Manage contracted communications activity. Develop, execute, and evaluate communications plans for DHHS initiatives. Coordinate with other departments and external providers.
  • Content Development - Develop content across platforms, internal communications, media relations, website, social media, and community outreach. Responsibilities include creating content for press materials, newsletters, social media, staff communications, talking points, ad copy, and videos.
  • Media Relations - Work with local media outlets to pitch stories, coordinate and execute news conferences, interview coordination, and advertising buys, to promote DHHS. Collaborate with departments to develop and distribute news releases and statements. Respond to media inquiries.
  • Community Outreach and Public Education - Create and distribute materials to various stakeholders and supporters. Coordinate DHHS presence at community events. Work collaboratively with governmental groups and local organizations to help educate residents on various programs and opportunities available.
  • Digital Strategy and Implementation - Develop website content and maintain content across the DHHS website. Work collaboratively on DHHS presence on social media platforms and use them to communicate information, and updates on key initiatives (including photography, graphic design, and some media production).
  • Internal Communications - Assist in the execution of internal communications. Draft staff communications on behalf of the Director's Office and Administrators. Assist in development of the annual report. Support DHHS governing boards with communications needs and material development.
  • Employee Engagement - Work with employee engagement committees and workgroups to develop and implement value programs and strategic communications.
  • Culturally Relevant Content - Produce materials that are accessible and relevant to multiple audiences and stakeholders. Materials and work products should be available in multiple languages and reflect the diversity of Milwaukee County. Must be aware of diverse communities and stakeholders.
  • Ability to push, pull, carry and lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, License/Certification and Experience

  • Current residency within the State of Wisconsin required
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and access to an insured and reliable vehicle required (must be maintained throughout employment)
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or closely related field required
  • Five (5) years or more of work experience in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or Marketing required
  • Advanced knowledge of all related computer and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required

Preferred Experiences

  • Previous graphic design experience preferred
  • Previous knowledge or experience working for a healthcare organization preferred
  • Previous work experience in a Supervisory or Management role preferred

Note: This Original Examination is open to current residents of the State of Wisconsin. The selection process will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral, or performance tests, or other assessment methods.

Pay: $52,104.00 - $79,705.60 per year
