JOB PURPOSE: The Costume Shop Manager plans, manages, and supervises the operation of the costume shop for the Theatre and Dance Departments. This position supervises the construction and maintenance of costumes and the overall operations of the costume shop. This position is responsible for hiring, processing personnel paperwork for, and directly supervising nine or more student employees in the Theatre & Dance Departments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Production Manager, the Costume Shop Manager works independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Hire, process personnel paperwork for, manage daily assignments, and directly supervise nine or more student employees in the Theatre & Dance Departments. Must complete the bi-annual AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention Training as required by the State of California.
  • Work closely with resident and guest costume designers for all productions and coordinates construction schedules, fittings, alterations, and other duties as needed in collaboration with designers.
  • Identify, hire, and supervise outside contractors (“overhire”) as needed to complete costumes for productions.
  • Plan the operation of costuming for the entire season of theatrical and individual productions.
  • Supervise the construction, alterations, repairs, cleaning, maintenance, and storage of theatrical costumes.
  • Supervise the construction or purchase of wigs and theatrical make-up.
  • Oversee production running crews for costume changes and wardrobe maintenance required during rehearsals and performances.
  • Manage costume budgets and authorize expenditures.
  • Supervise purchases of fabric, notions, and used clothing for the costume shop, adhering to production budget requirements.
  • Oversee inventory of costumes and materials for theatrical performances.
  • Oversee and track inventory donations of clothing and materials for the costume shop.
  • Coordinate spaces for cast dressing needs.
  • Assist with the teaching of Costume Construction class offered every other fall semester.
  • Coordinate special projects/tasks and provide assistance as assigned.
  • Attend all production meetings and any department meetings deemed required by the department chair.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education: Bachelor of Fine Arts or Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theater, Costume Design or a related field is required, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's of Fine Arts Degree in these fields is preferred.
  • Licenses/Certificates: A valid driver’s license is required or equivalent means of reliable transportation to off-site meetings and events.
  • Experience: Costume designing and production experience with increasing responsibility in teaching and supervision of college students is required. Experience at an academic institution is preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: This position must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using other skills and abilities not listed below.
  • Deploy professional skills in costume design and production, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the College’s strategic interests.
    • Is knowledgeable and well versed in various eras and appearance of vintage clothing.
    • Know how to supervise costume-related work for theatre productions and operations with accepted industry procedures, practices, and principles.
    • Make patterns, cut materials, drape, sew, dying materials, and fit cast members in costumes.
    • Communicate effectively with staff, students and faculty.
    • Can safely operate and train others to use domestic and industrial sewing machines, irons, wires and band cutters, grinder, grommet setters, and other tools as required.
  • Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, customer service and leadership skills to supervise, facilitate, motivate, and inspire a highly diverse group of student employees. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.
  • Operate computers proficiently with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook) and associated professional software (such as Internet research and menu-driven databases). Use assigned technology/devices/equipment to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
  • Handle all activities and highly confidential information with patience, discretion, good judgment, courtesy, and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the College’s strategic vision and the division’s/department’s annual goals.
  • Use exceptional organizational and time management skills to complete work with accuracy and keen attention to detail.
  • Operate the College’s vehicles safely for campus-related work and meet all insurance-related requirements.
  • Be able to stand for long periods of time and occasionally kneel.
  • Able to safely use spray paints, adhesives, and dyes in spray booth occasionally.
  • Able to safely lift and move boxes and heavy costumes up to 50 lbs., including lifting/hanging costumes in overhead storage spaces.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full-time position are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: Regular, full-time, 10 Month exempt position. The monthly salary for this role is between $5,649.17-$6,097.92, with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the organization will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include education, training, prior experience, and performance in prior role. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
