Job Overview
The Custodian provides building support services that ensure a safe, clean and comfortable environment for the University community provides building support services that ensure a safe, clean and comfortable environment for the University community. They behave in a professional manner, comply with policies and practices, is flexible regarding scheduling, and works as a part of a team. Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Performs general and specific cleaning and maintenance tasks to provide a clean, safe and pleasant physical environment
  • Performs other duties as assigned – including but not limited to furniture moving, office cleaning, class room cleaning, restroom cleaning, exterior entrances cleaning, emergency support, supporting special event set up and break down, and cleaning all public spaces.
  • Uses tools, equipment, and supplies of the trade
  • Observes all safety rules and regulations that meet state, federal, and local governing jurisdictions
Work Interactions
Reporting directly to the Manager of Custodial Services, the Custodian may report to another manager or staff member as assigned by the immediate supervisor or by the Director of Facilities Management. They interact with all levels of faculty, staff and students, as well as general public in performance of duties.
They provide building support services that ensure a safe, clean and comfortable environment for the University community. They conduct themselves in a professional manner, comply with policies and practices, and are flexible regarding scheduling and work as a part of a team.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalency preferred
  • Ability to read, write, and converse in English in order to read and understand product label instructions as well as policies and procedures, and to effectively discuss custodial matters with supervisors and others
  • Good attitude and customer service orientation
  • Ability to perform all levels of physical work including lifting, bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, and scrubbing and to apply a strong back and endurance for physical labor
  • Ability to sit, walk and stand while working, and to use arms and hands to lift and carry up to fifty pounds and custodial equipment
  • Willingness to observe safety rules and regulations that meet state, federal, and local governing jurisdictions
  • Possession of a valid driver's license in Virginia, Maryland, or District of Columbia for driving a University vehicle, if assigned
  • Qualify for driving a University vehicle and willingness to conform to University Driving Policy
  • Availability and willingness to work during emergency situations such as staffing shortages and snow removal – for example, emergency service for snow removal, inclement weather and water damage clean up.
Essential The Custodian is designated as an essential position, requiring incumbent to report to work during inclement weather at the regularly scheduled time, regardless of whether the University is closed, opening late, or closing early.
