General Position Description
The Dean of Student Success is a front-line leader of the college, responsible for promoting academic, administrative, and fiscal leadership in accordance with Valencia’s Strategic Impact Plan. The Dean of Student Success exercises leadership in planning, organizing, directing, and assessing programs and processes that assure departmental and Student Affairs division outcomes are achieved. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Dean of Student Success will spearhead student success initiatives of the college, overseeing Advising, Office for Students with Disabilities, and Career Services.

1. Provides vision, leadership, supervision, and administration for Advising, Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD), and Career Services.

2. Guides, evaluates, and delegates higher level work, ensuring compliance with applicable rules, laws, and guidelines. Completes annual performance development process with assigned leaders and employees according to college policy and the prescribed timeline. Supports program improvements and encourages professional development and growth of the team’s skills and performance.

3. Leads college-wide initiatives to develop and implement innovative student success solutions for Advising, Career Services, and OSD.

4. Facilitates organizational development and change to promote progressive and efficient strategies for retention, engagement, and student completion.

5. Attentively listens to, evaluates, and responds to student concerns regarding assigned departments. Resolves student concerns promptly and refers unresolved matters to the appropriate institutional area. Follows up with appropriate referral to ensure student concern is resolved. Collaborates with college-wide departments to address systemic issues impacting students, including staff training and accurate documentation.

6. Works closely with the Dean of Enrollment Management to establish and enhance a synergistic relationship between student success initiatives and the overall enrollment management plan, including transfer initiatives.

7. Collaborates with other staff members among Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to develop college-wide programs which promote student success.

8. Directs the ongoing training and development of staff members, including technology integration into support services such as the student information system, communications/case management system, student planning, and other related technologies.

9. Cultivates collaborative relationships with college-wide departments, including Academic Affairs and the Office of Information Technology, to provide robust support for student success initiatives.

10. Conducts comprehensive department/program assessments and evaluations to determine effectiveness and implements corrective action as needed for continuous improvement. Takes responsibility for design, data collection, implementation, and evaluation of plans related to institutional effectiveness. Ensures all phases of department planning are characterized by collaboration with staff and faculty. Participates with Student Affairs Leaders to enhance existing processes and implement new strategies to improve and advance student learning.

11. Reviews, recommends, develops, and implements a broad range of policies and procedures, standards, and outcomes for the Student Affairs division to continuously improve both efficiency and person-centered service to our students. Serves on college planning and policy-making committees.

Master's Degree from a regionally accredited institution.

Four (4) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in advising, career services, students with disabilities, or related student success programs, to include managerial/supervisory experience as well as formulating and implementing initiatives in improving retention and completion outcomes.

Working Conditions

General Working Conditions
This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Typical physical competencies include but are not limited to frequently remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self and occasionally ascending/descending, lifting/moving objects weighing between 5-15 pounds. This job also entails frequently communicating, discerning and exchanging information, detecting and perceiving objects up close, at a distance, and the ability to adjust focus. Cognitive abilities include but are not limited to frequently using discretion, judgment, reasoning, memory, learning, maintaining confidentiality, comprehension, problem solving, and decision-making.
