Job Description Summary
For six years in a row, Bentley University’s student-athletes have earned the highest graduation rate in the nation, according to the NCAA. The Director of Athletic Communications will serve as the primary storyteller and communicator for all varsity sports at Bentley University. In conjunction with the athletic communications staff, they will market and promote Bentley athletics to the university community and on the regional and national level; maintain the university’s athletics website; work with a team to create social media, graphics, video and photos to disseminate news about Bentley athletics; compile statistics, reports, polls, schedules, standings and other information; represent the institution at selected events; oversee the nomination and publicity of conference, regional, and national awards; develop and maintain athletics archives and records; attend administrative meetings of the department and assist with department planning. Bentley University varsity sports belong to the NCAA Division II and the Northeast-10 Conference, with the exception of men’s ice hockey, which is a member of the Division I Atlantic Hockey Conference. This position reports to the associate athletics director.
Essential Duties
  • Primary responsibilities include: The publicity and promotion of Bentley University's athletic programs using online stories, video, photos, graphics and social media, in addition to sharing stories with the media.
  • Specific duties include but are not limited to: writing and editing game stories, overseeing the creation of social media, video, graphics and other content; game programs, game notes, postseason guides, and other media and promotional material; compiling statistics and reporting results to appropriate media outlets; assisting in home event management; assisting in the maintenance of the athletics website and all department social media initiatives; and serving as the athletic communications liaison with the NE10, Atlantic Hockey, NCAA, the College Sports Communicators and other organizations.
  • This position will be required to write and edit content for university-wide publications as well as athletics-focused publications.
  • This role will work with university Marketing and Communications as well as with the Athletics Marketing director on marketing strategy and branding.
  • This position must assist in maintaining and organizing records, statistics and historical information on the university's intercollegiate athletics programs
  • This position will also be responsible for the staffing and oversight of the department's online broadcasting efforts
  • In coordination with the university multimedia producer and in accordance with procurement and IT, they hire photographers and maintain photo and video files.
  • Will supervise and mentor the assistant director, communications interns and work-study students.
  • This position requires availability on nights and weekends as well as some travel

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in an athletics communications position. Knowledge of athletics, statical software, Adobe Creative Suite and streaming platforms
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient in social media trends
  • Must hold and maintain a valid, unrestricted United States driver’s license, with an insurable driving history as determined by Bentley’s insurance carrier.

  • Master’s degree
Work Environment
  • Typical office setting with extensive sitting and computer work.
  • Ability to travel around campus for meetings and work related events
