Job Description

Summary
The Director, Market Areas, SUAS will oversee a staff of Customer Program Managers while also having Business Development and Marketing matrixed into the Market Area organization. This position is responsible for identifying, capturing, and executing SUAS opportunities throughout the world. The position will also require identifying market areas for growth by looking at; market adjacencies, untapped markets, organic and inorganic growth opportunities. The Director, SUAS Market Areas manages individuals who interface with all aspects of the business opportunity from capture through to delivery of product with a strong focus on customer service.
Position Responsibilities
  • Ensures all long-term plans/goals for AV/SUAS are supported and executed for global customers
  • Selects, develops, and evaluates a team of individuals, ensuring they perform at the highest level
  • Ensures the successful accomplishment of departmental and corporate objectives/deliverables for the SUAS product line
  • Identifies target markets of opportunities and positions SUAS to compete and win within new markets
  • Supports SUAS business strategy by evaluating and proving elements such as; customer needs statements, market growth opportunities, enabling technologies, geo-political factors, etc.
  • Ensures Program managers develop, define, and execute product delivery plans to include meeting schedules, budgets, EAC’s goals
  • Drives the product/program/project from RFP (request for proposal) or earlier through delivery, interfacing with both internal and external customers on all matters including technical requirements for the customer
  • Directs and/or works with Business Development in the pursuit of new opportunities, specifically looking for new customers<>new markets
  • Mentors and coaches Program Managers to grow their program through follow on sustainment sales, with a focus to ‘keep the program sold’
  • Assigns and monitors work of program management staff, providing leadership, mentoring, and technical support and direction while performing similar tasks themselves
  • Supports preparation of budgets, bids, or contracts
  • Supports the development and implementation of policies, standards, or procedures for Program Management
  • Directs recruitment, placement, and evaluation of Customer Facing program management team
  • Works closely with Product Line Managers, Business Development, Marketing, Contracts, Engineering, Finance, Production, QA, Training, Export Compliance and Air Worthiness as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills & Experience)
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering/Computer Science or related field is required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Minimum of 12+ years of directly related program management experience or equivalent
  • Minimum of 8+ years of people management of Program Managers or equivalent
  • Experience leading a major function or product area
  • Experience analyzing and developing strategic plans for business growth
  • Demonstrated experience in controls planning, staffing, budgeting, managing multiple priorities and recommending and implementing change
  • Requires regular interactions with peers/leaders and managers across all functions to identify and resolve issues
  • Leverages talent across the organization and across functions to achieve predictable program results
  • Utilizes leadership and negotiation skills to influence outcomes both with internal and external customers
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, workforce modeling, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination of people and resources

  • Advanced degree is preferred

  • Assesses the degree of risk and opportunity in plans and takes appropriate action to mitigate them or makes plans to build on the opportunity
Physical Demands
  • Occasionally may be required to travel within the Continental U.S. & International
  • Ability to work in an office and R&D environment (Constant)
  • Required to sit and stand for long periods; talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer and telephone keyboard (Frequent)
The salary range for this role is:
$189,201 - $283,801
AeroVironment considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the location, the role and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, education/training, and key skills.

This position requires access to information that is subject to compliance with the International Traffic Arms Regulations (“ITAR”) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (“EAR”).
