Job Summary
The Director of Business Development for Career and Member Services is responsible for developing new business opportunities for IEEE-USA by growing its revenue, finding, and developing new business opportunities, and expanding the IEEE-USA's brand. The Director of Business Development will be responsible for strengthening IEEE-USA's Career and Member Services program, including our Awards program, consultant member services, and public webinar library. They will also oversee IEEE-USA's growing portfolio of technical conferences, meetings, and workshops. The incumbent will be responsible for increasing IEEE-USA involvement in public meetings for the purpose of improving member value and generating non-dues revenue for the Institute. In addition, they will also seek out additional opportunities in the conference space for IEEE-USA. This role will report directly to the Managing Director of IEEE-USA and will have 1-2 direct reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • The execution of the business development vision, strategy, plans, and processes to drive sales, increase revenue, expand markets, and accomplish financial objectives
  • Identifies and evaluates new markets, partners, channels, and customers.
  • Develops and uses contacts and relationships within the industry, business environment, and customer base to understand and respond to competition, pricing, and product demand change.
  • Collaborates with marketing, sales, product development, and other stakeholders to support business development plans.
  • Oversees the development of proposals and contracts for new business opportunities and manages negotiations.
  • A change agent for institutional change with new ideas, projects, and inspiration
  • Oversee IEEE-USA’s conference portfolio. Actively seek out new opportunities to partner with or create new conferences and other meetings
  • Lead team in managing government training workshops and other IEEE-USA events
  • Manage IEEE-USA Awards and Consultant programs
  • Work with and manage volunteers, volunteer advisory committees, & boards
  • Supervise staff and consultants
  • Work with IEEE-USA’s communications and government affairs teams to enhance Institute programs
  • Develop relationships with state and federal government agencies for the purpose of increasing government involvement in and support of our meeting portfolio
  • Represent IEEE-USA at events and to event partners
  • Provide the IEEE-USA Board of Directors with updates, projections, plans, and other information as requested
  • Track and review contracts, MOUs, and agreements on the management and ownership of meetings
  • Oversee the budgets and finances of the department, as well as its meetings and conferences
  • Cultivate partnerships both within and outside of the IEEE
  • Develop innovative products and services for IEEE members, including our consultant, student, and Young Professional members
  • Develop programs to increase diversity within the engineering profession
  • Primary Liaison to IEEE-USA’s Vice President for Career and Member Services
  • Oversee the development of new, innovative, and interesting webinars on career topics for IEEE members
  • Lead efforts to generate non-dues revenue for IEEE-USA
  • Assist with the marketing and promotion of IEEE-USA events
  • Lead IEEE-USA efforts to provide services to other IEEE conferences, including generating sponsorships, attendance, identifying speakers, and working with the IEEE Communications Department to promote IEEE-USA-sponsored events.

Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience Pref
Work Experience
  • 7-10 years Experience running conferences, meetings, trade shows, or other large events, and working with government agencies. Req
  • 2-4 years Experience in management/supervision Req
  • 2-4 years Experience successfully leading an income-producing initiative or project Req
  • Experience working in a membership organization. Pref
Skills and Requirements
  • Excellent financial management skills
  • Ability to Create functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure.
  • Leadership and entrepreneurial skills
  • Strategic focus and familiarity with change management
  • Strong communications skills (verbal and written fluency in English)
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Contract negotiation/management experience
  • Relations/familiarity with industry, government, and academia (in areas of interest/concern to IEEE U.S. members)
  • Creative problem-solving and innovative event programming
  • Diplomatic management of volunteer committees and leadership
