OVERVIEW
Portal Innovations is seeking a Director of Ecosystem and Business Development in Houston to establish
Portal’s platform and help identify, select, and support portfolio companies that fit Portal’s thesis. This role will collaborate closely with the leadership team to continuously assess the operating and business model for Portal
Innovations’ expansion into Houston. This role is expected to have an understanding of the life science ecosystem, identify key stakeholders, and build and maintain relationships. This role will benefit from the unique and entrepreneurial environment at Portal Innovations.
The Director of Ecosystem and Business Development will be the first Portal-Houston site hire and will be responsible for all aspects of the facility and overall site management during the initial phase of the site rollout.
In addition, this role is responsible for providing leadership, helping build a team, setting expectations, and building and managing relationships.
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Portal Houston: Start-up Phase
- Use strong leadership, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills to foster key relationships and assist with daily operations
- Work with the leadership team to develop tasks required to launch Portal Operations in Houston
- Initiate, develop, and establish Portal’s partnerships with local life science ecosystem stakeholders
(universities, corporations, consultants, VCs, vendors, etc.)
- As determined necessary and appropriate, establish a local cadence, helping startups find local programs and resources specific for life science startups.
Portal Houston: Platform Facing
- Establish and connect marketing, talent management and community building in Houston and link across the Portal platform in other cities
- Suggest and help organize programs that convene the local ecosystem and provide pertinent content for the benefit of portfolio companies and other stakeholders
- Implement Portal’s operating model which includes onboarding activities (pre-move-in, move in), ongoing facilities management and off-boarding activities for resident companies
Portal Houston: Ventures Facing
- Build and leverage network of startups, tech transfer offices, interns, advisors and KOLs to ensure deep and wide knowledge across Portal domains
- Build a pipeline of early-stage prospects and work with Portal Venture Operations and Growth Strategy teams to monitor and conduct outreach
- Develop and sustain business relationships with companies residing in Portal Innovations facilities including gaining and maintaining the respect of the scientific community and being responsible for customer relationship management
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Experience in areas of Life Science startups, venture capital, business development, or healthcare
- Graduate degree in Science, Engineering, or related Life Science degree (PhD preferred, MS minimum)
- Experience building and managing relationships
- Strong work ethic, organized and detail oriented
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team as well as independently
- Flexibility and adaptability to grow as the role evolves

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $130,000.00 - $180,000.00 per year
