Grinnell College is a private liberal arts and sciences college located in Grinnell, Iowa, and is ranked #15 on the U.S. News and World Report’s list of Best National Liberal Arts Colleges. About 1,750 students attend the College, representing 50 states and 40+ countries. The Investment Office (“GCIO”) manages the College’s $2.5 billion endowment, which is known across the country as a top performer among peer institutions. The endowment supports about 60% of the College’s annual operating budget, allowing Grinnell to maintain need-blind admissions and offer financial aid to meet 100% of demonstrated need without loans. In aggregate, 89% of Grinnell students receive aid to help pay for their years at the College.

POSITION SUMMARY
The Director of Investment Operations will report to the Chief Investment Officer and will work closely with other members of the investment team. The Director is charged with maintaining a robust operational infrastructure and serving as the primary information source for all endowment accounts. This individual is expected to take initiative, research, and provide feedback on existing systems and processes and eventually provide recommendations that continuously improve the efficiency, accuracy, and sustainability of the office’s operations. Grinnell maintains a diversified portfolio and, as a result, the Director of Investment Operations is expected to work across marketable and private asset classes. The Investment Office has physical locations in Grinnell, Iowa (the preferred location for this role) and Boston, MA. GCIO would consider remote candidates willing to travel to the campus office location. RESPONSIBILITIES
- Investment Operations Management: Oversee all operational aspects of managing the endowment. Provide strategic leadership to design and implement processes and procedures that continuously improve all operational and investment functions. Collaborate with colleagues inside and external to the Investment Office to meet Grinnell’s institutional mission. Develop a strategic vision for GCIO’s Operations team and mentor and train colleagues.
- Data Management: Maintain investment performance reporting data and systems and reconcile portfolio activity with the College’s custodian. Oversee complete and accurate data records across investment performance and document management systems. Serve as the primary liaison to external data management companies and reporting vendors; approve payment of investment office invoices; and compile data for external surveys and annual audit.
- Endowment Reporting & Portfolio Analysis: Regularly design and update various reports for distribution to the investment team, investment committee, and College trustees. Lead and/or prepare analysis of the endowment portfolio and individual investment managers, including: absolute and relative performance, exposures, attribution, and liquidity. Work closely with external auditors and the Treasurer’s Office on the annual endowment audit process.
- Financial Activity and Analysis: Manage cash held in endowment and other investment pools. Prepare, monitor, and reconcile transaction processing including capital calls and others transfers. Project cash flows to ensure compliance with College policies. Execute on the sale of distributed stock.
- Manager Diligence, Legal and Other: Assist the investment team in evaluating potential investment managers, including operational due diligence, fund legal document review, audited financial statements, and preparation of fund subscription documents. Represent the College effectively while interacting with investment managers and other endowments and institutional investors.
