About the Team:
The Global People Team is made up of seasoned professionals with a diverse range of expertise – spanning talent acquisition, business partnering, regional operations, and a growing core of functional experts in culture, leadership, talent, learning, organizational development, compensation, benefits, systems, and analytics. Building on the recent global launch of Workday, we are supporting the company's continued hyper-growth focused on two core corporate objectives – building the operational excellence and scalable infrastructure to deliver our strategy while supporting profitable growth; and evolving our culture so it is optimized for delivering our strategy and supporting our growth and scale while attracting and retaining top talent.
About the Role:
We are seeking an innovative and experienced Director of Leadership & Learning to join our Global People Team. You will play a central part in delivering two of the People Team's primary goals for 2023 and beyond – making AlphaSense the best place for people to be, and building an AI-infused culture that aligns with and drives our strategy. In addition to partnering with colleagues across the Global People Team, you will be supported by a Leadership & Learning Associate role as a direct report.
What You'll Do:
While they are closely related and will integrate with and reinforce one another, it's helpful to think of the role's accountabilities in two areas – learning and culture.
a. Learning
We believe our people will consider AlphaSense the best place to be if they are truly experiencing growth at work. People achieve growth if they have frequent opportunities to learn and build skills, knowledge, and experience that make them better at what they do, and if the company helps them fulfill their career aspirations.
That's why the learning dimension of this role is so important. Here are your learning accountabilities:
- Build learning across the company – This will be a primary focus for you and will span multiple aspects, such as defining our overall learning philosophy and approach; supporting employee-led learning aligned with their career goals; conducting targeted needs analysis and curriculum development for roles and teams; implementing a Learning Management System and content strategy; and so forth. (This will not include Sales Training, which is owned by our Sales Enablement Team.)
- Grow great people managers – As a hyper-growth company that has scaled almost 5X in 3 years both organically and through acquisitions, we have a mix of first-time managers we've promoted and experienced managers we've hired (who in turn bring with them a disparate mix of management practices and approaches). Building on the concept that the best managers are both "warm and demanding," you will help us define the foundational skills, behaviors, and practices that make great People Managers at AlphaSense, and then develop and onboard our People Managers accordingly.
- Develop future-oriented senior leaders – Focusing on our most senior leaders (typically, Vice President and above), you will develop a range of content, practices, experiences, events, coaching, mentoring, and other ways to translate our values and leadership principles into pragmatic ways to develop, promote, and hire the leaders AlphaSense needs to evolve our culture and deliver our mission.
- Integrate learning into events and experiences – We have built our Fluid Working strategy (our approach to hybrid work) on the core belief that a primary value of in-office interactions is to nurture close and trusted relationships. Toward that end, our Workplace, Community & Experience team runs our Corporate HQ in Union Square and organizes a range of in-office and virtual events and experiences to enhance connection among our team. You will partner with the WCE team to optimize ways in which our events and experiences can nurture learning goals as well.
- Create a Culture of Belonging – We are making steady progress on our diversity, equity & inclusion efforts – which we call "Creating a Culture of Belonging." You will help accelerate those efforts by ensuring diversity, equity & inclusion themes are woven into every aspect of learning, management, leadership.
b. Culture
Peter Drucker famously said "Culture eats strategy for breakfast." What he actually meant is that a misaligned culture eats strategy for breakfast. Too often, companies equate "culture" with creating a great place to work. Being a great place to work is fundamental and important. But it's only part of the story. Building on that foundation, you also need a culture that aligns with and drives your business strategy.
As a business, we have set out our strategic aspirations for the next three years. As part of that process, we are also identifying the ways in which our business will change and thus how our culture will need to evolve to align with and drive our strategy. We will then identify the most impactful initiatives to help us achieve the desired AI-infused culture.
As the Director of Leadership & Learning, you will own or influence many of those initiatives – partnering closely with others on the People Leadership Team as well as leaders, managers, and team members across the organization.
Who You Are:
Given where AlphaSense is today, the extraordinary opportunity that lies ahead, and the criticality of the Leadership & Learning role to that journey, we'll need a lot from you.
- You are a curious and creative expert – With advances in everything from technology, AI, and content creation to brain science, behavioral economics, and education, few disciplines are changing as fast and as much as learning & development. You recognize that too often "best practice" is "what used to work," and – as a voracious learner yourself – you are constantly in search of (and sometimes creating) "next practice." Your curiosity applies to all things learning, as well as to emerging practices in culture and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
- You are a builder – Although we're now 1,200 people and growing, you'll be the first learning professional we've hired. As a hyper-growth scaleup, we're at the stage where we are "big, while also building the ability to be big." As a result, we'll need you to build from the ground up, not renovate or modernize something that's already in place. That doesn't mean you need to come from the early stage startup world – just that you have experience successfully building a learning function in a place where it didn't exist before.
- You are tech savvy, analytical, and data literate – The best learning professionals leverage the latest in technology, data, and analytics, and are superb at measuring and reporting on learning programs and outcomes. At AlphaSense, we expect that . . . and so much more. We're at the cutting edge of AI, and our power users are knowledge professionals who do deep research in financial services, life sciences, technology, media, telecommunications, energy & industrials, and a range of other specialized verticals. You'll play a core role in helping us to create an AI-infused culture, and a primary focus for you will be our global Product & Engineering team. To thrive in this context, you'll need to be a true learning geek!
- You are a global collaborator – While more than half of our team is in the US, the vast majority of our Product & Engineering organization is in India and Finland. We also are growing in the UK and continental Europe, and we're now expanding rapidly in Singapore. In addition to having a global mindset and cross-cultural awareness, you are highly collaborative and deploy a quiet confidence and authority that drives delivery through strong relationships, influence, and expert communication skills.
- You have executive presence and credibility – You convey a level of credibility and authority that engenders trust with senior leaders, people managers, and team members across the broader organization.
- You have an exceptional work ethic – Hyper-growth is hard at the best of times. But being the first learning professional to join at a point when we are scaling to and through an IPO truly requires sustained pace and intensity.
- You are empathetic and other-oriented, with high emotional and cultural intelligence – Through self-awareness, modesty, and a desire to help others succeed, you are the consummate diplomat – explaining, negotiating where needed, and sensing the mood and developments among relevant parties to drive the right outcomes without needlessly offending or stepping on toes.
