Brief Summary of Job Duties
Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Finance & Administration, the goal of the Office of Safety, Health, and Environment (OSHE) is to create a safe work environment, promote environmentally sound practices, mitigate risks, prepare and respond to emergencies, and foster compliance with regulations and requirements of accrediting agencies. The successful candidate will oversee all OSHE programs, which have a significant impact on University operations; and oversees and executes strategic goals and objectives that directly align with MSU strategy. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Assess, develop, and implement standardized safety programs and initiatives campus-wide.
- Participate in function related campus committees and planning sessions in order to develop consensus based policies and procedures.
- Partner with upper level administrators and other directors on a regular basis to set strategic goals and objectives for OSHE.
- Foster a mutually beneficial relationship between OSHE and other university departments to provide effective communication and partnership throughout the campus by enforcing strict standards of visibility and empathy towards the varying needs of different departments within regulatory limits.
- Represent OSHE and the University during public events, outreach events, and conferences.
Requested Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, engineering, industrial hygiene, or related field.
Ten (10) years of progressive experience in the environmental, health, and safety field.
Other Preferences for Consideration
Master’s degree or Ph.D. in relevant field.
Professional-level credential (CSP, CIH, etc.) or related certification.
Experience in higher education and leadership/management highly desired.
Thorough knowledge of all applicable legal and regulatory requirements (OSHA, EPA, Hazmat, etc.) Skilled in effective use of applicable technology/systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and in writing. Ability to support a mission and strategic vision. Instructional, training, and team building skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships.
