The Director of Packaging Development is both an individual contributor and the leader of the Packaging function for Glossier, spearheading excellence in execution of our unique packaging components in support of our company's growing product portfolio. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of the packaging life cycle (both front-end and back-end) and see projects through from concept to launch. The Director is the brand steward for packaging, responsible for the sourcing, development and production of all packaging to meet the needs of brand aesthetics, consumer use, manufacturability, and quality within the time and cost targets. This is a senior level role responsible for ensuring smooth workflows, gaining process efficiencies, and supporting teams and individuals to optimize packaging development and production. This role is a part of the Product Development team, and will report into the Head of Product Development, with two direct reports.
- Pick up and see through the development of all 2023 and 2024 launches.
- Build strong cross-functional relationships to support the successful launch of new products.
- Communicate with packaging suppliers and contract manufacturers on project status updates, act as a liaison with vendors and continue to build on current and new relationships.
- Effectively lead a team of packaging developers, ensuring they have clear pathways for professional development.
- Create packaging briefs detailing pack and formula requirements, and manage new project kick-off with packaging suppliers and internal design team, evaluating launch feasibility based on cost, lead-times, technical functionality, design aesthetics and manufacturability.
- Collaborate with Design and PD teams to develop and source packaging options, both stock and fully custom, that are compatible with the formula and meets design needs with a focus on sustainability.
- Oversee and track project status and timelines to ensure all development milestones are met by the brand and suppliers, and identify any potential problems that may result from timing, insufficient technical capabilities, capacity at fillers, errors, or cost constraints, and develop options and recommendations/solutions that address project issues.
- Own budget for packaging related expenses such as new tooling and comps.
- Utilize Glossier's PLM System (Specright) to create component codes and bill of materials for products.
- Develop packaging sample matrices, FMEA reports, and test plans (compatibility, fill weight, UV light, function, transit, etc.).
- Own approval of production samples, standards, and range boards approval between internal cross- functional teams, suppliers, and contract manufacturers.
- Develop and upskill the Packaging Development team, direct reports.
- Identify cross-functional process improvements to create efficiencies in workstream and collaboration, optimizing the function's role within the brand.
- Drive new packaging development by delivering on creative design vision and presenting new concepts, technologies and delivery systems across the organization.
- Build and execute packaging related sustainability initiatives.
- Manage 2025 projects to ensure launch timing, testing, product quality, and design integrity are on time and within agreed upon cost objectives.
- Provide comprehensive feasibility of each concept or package that defines function, manufacturability, component cost, tooling estimates, preliminary development lead time, risk and global consistency.
- Maintain pulse of industry trends, new technologies and new product packaging. Keep informed through colleagues, vendors, journals, professional affiliations, and seminars of new materials, processes, and procedures.
- Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering or related field.
- 7+ years experience in package engineering and development, concentrated in the prestige beauty industry.
- Experienced people manager.
- Comprehensive knowledge of materials used in the construction and manufacturing of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.
- Comprehensive knowledge of test methods used to validate component/package performance.
- Experience building strong relationships with domestic and international vendors.
- Excellent interpersonal skills. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to be clear and concise.
- Background in Sustainability appreciated.
In accordance with the applicable law, the following represents a good faith estimate of the minimum and maximum compensation range for this position:
- The estimated annual pay range for this role is $148,000 - $192,000
- There may be future opportunities for continued pay progression based on continued strong performance in the role.
