The Team

Our mission in the Science Initiative is to support science and technology that will help make it possible to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by the end of the century. Through our grantmaking, we support interdisciplinary teams of physicians, biologists, computational scientists, engineers, and patient advocates to expand our understanding of the human body and illness — the science behind medicine. Our grantmaking program partners with our internal Science Technology team, which builds tools for and with scientists. We value people, technology, collaboration, and open science.

Our team is seeking a creative, inquisitive, and versatile product management director to lead our Science product work who is passionate about the exploration, visualization, and transformation of scientific data and knowledge. You will work closely with a collaborative team of scientists, computational biologists, engineers, designers, user researchers, and data scientists to create software tools that accelerate the pace of the biological sciences. We aim to help make every scientist a better scientist by improving the tools and technologies they rely on every day. What You'll Do

  • Leads CZI Science Product Management function.
  • Build and execute a strategy and roadmap to maximize CZI Science impact on scientists, clinicians, and patient communities.
  • Collaborate with cross functional partners, Program colleagues as well Design, Engineering, Computational Biology, and Data Science functions to execute the strategy
  • Devise, track, and monitor and share product metrics of impact and performance, adjusting plans and strategies based on data insights
  • Ensure effective management of existing solutions, including monitoring progress, validating solutions with users, and successful product releases and launch
  • Partner with the head of Science technology, program and functional heads, to conduct joint planning, execute on roadmaps, and balance strategic development of existing products alongside experimentation and exploration of new initiatives
  • Oversee the entire product lifecycle for products and services that from ideation to launch, making recommendations on investment levels
  • Hire, develop, and retain a talented team of Product Managers and Computational Biologists, and Application Scientists that understand their program areas, how to translate needs into requirements using standard frameworks
  • Collaborate and coordinate with central operations teams to participate in and contribute to the planning, strategy reviews, and organization-wide processes such as budgeting, goal setting, and evaluation.

What You'll Bring

  • 10+ years senior product management experience, with experience leading in a matrixed environment and 3+ years managing managers
  • A credible deep technical leader and the voice of science innovation across all of our products services, and program areas
  • A proven track record of building and executing strategies and plans to ensure the right solutions are built and launched and that success metrics are well defined at the start of any endeavor
  • Experience with data strategy / portfolio of data products in the biosciences industry and accountability for delivering value to the customer
  • Knowledge of and curiosity about the latest scientific advancements in the life sciences, particularly genomics / molecular biology / cell biology
  • A demonstrated history of achieving alignment across, high-performing, cross functional teams of engineers, product managers, and designers, within the life sciences
  • Ability to speak with biosciences researchers in their own language, understand their ways of working, and help them understand the value that new data tools, visual capabilities, metadata, and platforms can bring to their daily lives
  • A deep understanding of the value of ontology and computable metadata, and their applications in the biosciences and / or clinical data
  • Experience leading multiple large product teams including developing skills and capacity of managers and their team members
  • Demonstrated experience with product lifecycle managing project decisions at various stages of maturity including concept to launch to end-of-life.

The Redwood City, CA base pay range for this role is $270,000.00 - $405,000.00. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range, enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience, as evaluated throughout the interview process. Pay ranges outside Redwood City are adjusted based on cost of labor in each respective geographical market.
