Director, Research & Development - Verathon®

Verathon ® is looking for a Director of Research & Development to become the newest member of our Imaging R&D Team located in Bothell, WA.

The Director of Research & Development is responsible for leading the R&D organization for our Imaging (IBU) Business Unit. The IBU business is focused on solving niche customer challenges such as Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI) through our BladderScan® imaging solutions. The R&D director will play a pivotal role in IBU growth through innovation of new technologies and enhancing/sustaining current platforms. This will include liaising with Product Marketing to understand customer problems and evolving niche therapies. The R&D Director will drive unique innovation to build a set of core technology assets that can be customized to provide multiple customer solutions. The position also requires partnership with cross-functional teams in roadmap development, program management, product life-cycle management from ideation through End of Life (EOL), budgeting, and tradeoff decisions to execute high quality innovative solutions on time and on budget.

Please note that this is a hybrid position (3 days in office per week); candidates must be based or willing to relocate to Washington State upon start date.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Lead the IBU R&D and Advanced Development organizations comprised of mechanical, electrical, software, test, systems, and reliability engineers, as well as other technical and scientific disciplines
  • Lead all product launch initiatives for R&D including driving any necessary course correction to ensure deliverables will be met
  • Partner with other cross-functional stakeholders to ensure commercial and financial success, including quality & regulatory, marketing, supply chain, service, and senior executives
  • Liaise extensively with quality, manufacturing, and sustaining engineering to drive continuous improvement in quality, reliability and cost throughout product life cycles
  • Direct research efforts for internal products and as appropriate, integration efforts for acquired technology in conjunction with senior management
  • Prepare detailed program investment estimates
  • Present programs for approval and deliver programs to time and investment commitments
  • Lead programs through the product development process, in close partnership with marketing, sales, quality and senior management
  • Manage to milestone deliverables as defined by the PDP process and as approved by senior management
  • Ensure conformity to FDA 21 CFR Design Control and risk management throughout the program’s development
  • Improve design control processes such that they genuinely drive first time quality at launch

  • Source new talent, guide and develop the team, and build an execution focused culture
  • Develop business case rationale for resourcing needs
  • Manage departmental budget and workforce planning efforts to meet business need on time and within budget
  • Assist with M&A activities in partnership with senior management
  • Provide valuation and technical insight on external product offerings as requested
  • Partner with global sales and marketing teams to fully understand customer perspective and integrate learnings into developmental activities
  • Partner with Quality, Manufacturing, Customer Care, Tech Services and Sales personnel to drive continuous improvement in Cost, Quality and Reliability of instruments throughout their life cycles

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • BS in Engineering or related field required; Master’s in Engineering preferred
  • 10 years of relevant experience, including a minimum of 7 years team management experience is required
  • Medical device industry experience is desired.
  • Experience leading product development efforts within a defined stage gate review process, preferably in partnership with cross-functions peers in Business Unit settings.
  • Experience working in a regulated medical device environment with experience in Design Controls is desired.
  • Proven track record of delivering products on time and within budget
  • Understanding of Engineering disciplines which may include Mechanical, Electrical, Software, and/or Systems Engineering.
  • Experience leading a multi-disciplinary Engineering organization.
  • Able to develop, design and test to specified reliability targets, and grow product reliability performance post-launch
  • Excellent management skills and passion around developing technical talent
  • Strong business acumen and communication skills with ability to interact at all levels and functions of the organization
  • Strong sense of creativity to problem solving and ability to think outside the box

Salary range - $175,000-$220,000 (Compensation will vary based on skills, experience and location. If this position is filled outside the Seattle WA metro area, this salary range will vary depending on the specific hiring location.)

Full-time non-sales employees are eligible for Verathon’s annual bonus plan based on company and individual performance.
