The Opportunity
The Director, Software Engineering (Application Development) will oversee strategic planning, development, delivery & maintenance of Cala's commercial and pipeline digital medicine products. The digital product portfolio includes Cala Trio, the first noninvasive neurostimulator cleared by the FDA to treat hand tremor in patients with Parkinson's Disease and Essential Tremor.
The overall compensation range for this role is market driven, with a salary range of $165,000 - $225,000. This market range is based on our base compensation. Additionally, we offer Cala Health company stock options and a robust benefits package. This offering is aligned with our overall compensation philosophy.
Specific responsibilities also include:
  • Collaborating with other senior leaders across Cala's business to plan and produce medical device apps and web interfaces that match company-wide objectives
  • Directing, mentoring, and growing the capability of a team of internal and external web and mobile app developers
  • Strategic planning for translating product definition, marketing requirements, user experience inputs into technical requirements and development sprints
  • Understanding and incorporating regulatory and SaMD requirements into Cala's digital development process
  • Maintaining unrelenting individual and team focus on keeping every aspect of our work aligned with what is best for Cala's patients
  • Scaling development processes and quality control for rapidly growing digital portfolio and user base
  • Instilling a collaborative team culture rooted in agile practices and MVP mindset
  • Communicating closely with Cala's hardware and back end leaders to ensure highest quality across the entire product ecosystem

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • 10+ years proven track record launching and sustaining digital interfaces with a high degree of user interaction; preferably in the medical device or healthcare industry
  • Long history leading Agile web and mobile app development across the full stack, from early product conception through mass adoption
  • Building, documentation, and maintenance of medical software in an FDA regulated environment (SaMD)
  • Ability to hire, train and retain key technical personnel. Prioritizing digital development efforts across multiple products and projects
  • Strong business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit, paired with the ability to build highly a highly functional team environment (especially amongst remote employees and team members)
  • Experience with web and mobile development tools such as Python, AWS, Figma, React, and Terraform
  • Balancing, summarizing, and distilling complex product requests with practical technical constraints and limitations
  • Maintaining multiple apps across multiple device platforms, especially in a regulated environment
  • Experience building an integrations platform/infrastructure to seamlessly integrate 3rd party applications
  • Familiarity with FDA Quality System Regulations, Medical Device Directive, ISO 13485, ISO 14971, and ISO 62304 standards is a plus
