Police Department:
Here at the UCF Police Department, we strive to be the most professional, progressive, and innovative law enforcement agency in the country. Join our family where you will be the critical link between individuals in distress and the emergency services they need at a moment's notice. You will be provided with the proper training to remain calm under pressure and skillfully gather and convey the key pieces of information that first responders need to be ready when they arrive on scene. We hire the finest and most qualified individuals to be the 9-1-1 dispatchers that are composed and mentally present to help maximize the speed of the entire dispatch process, reducing response times and saving lives.
The Opportunity:
UCF is seeking to fill multiple Dispatcher II roles. Candidates for this job posting will be considered for additional vacancies in this department. Dispatcher II is considered a critical personnel position and is responsible for emergency and non-emergency police dispatching services including receiving and processing telephone complaints, operating teletype systems, and dispatching law enforcement officers to calls for service. This position provides optimum customer service to callers under significant emotional strain and stress. Effective and efficient performance in a fast-paced environment is necessary. Certifications required will be provided by the UCF Police and must be completed within six months.
Responsibilities:
  • Receives and evaluates calls from the public requesting police assistance of both emergency and non-emergency natures. Operates Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management systems to record and retrieve data relevant to requests for police and non-police service calls. Operates 800 MHz Radio console to dispatch calls to public safety units, parking patrollers, and other auxiliary units. Provides police and non-police units with necessary information to accomplish their tasks. Coordinates police information with other local law enforcement agencies. Answers all incoming calls on business line, take messages and/or transfer calls appropriately.
  • Uses various criminal justice and public safety computer systems to check driver's license records, vehicle registrations, stolen files, warrants, criminal histories, and other files. Uses university computer system to check student, parking services, and other related files. Completes and maintains other various departmental logs.
  • Monitors campus-wide critical equipment alarm systems. Dispatches police and/or makes appropriate notifications for proper disposition of all alarms received and/or reported in the emergency call center. Monitors security cameras at access doors of the University police department. Operates door release systems to admit persons into the police building. Operates the Emergency Alert Notification system.
  • Performs other related work as required and/or directed.
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma and 2+ years of relevant dispatch experience or completion of training and probation as a UCF Law Enforcement Dispatcher.

Must receive National Crime Information Center (NCIC)/Florida Crime Information Center (FCIC) certifications provided by UCF Police within six months of employment.

Successful completion of an appropriate 9-1-1 emergency dispatcher training that meets the requirements of current Department of Health Public Safety Telecommunicator course provided by UCF Police must be obtained within the first 6-months of employment. Certification must be maintained once complete.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of multi-line telephone system, radio, and other computer equipment, and its operation.
  • Knowledge of jurisdiction geography, University geography, and associated landmarks.
  • Knowledge of all equipment and resources available for processing both non-emergency and emergency requests.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate ways of dealing with individuals in crisis situations.
  • Knowledge of public records laws and dissemination of records information relating to students and law enforcement.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and reach closure on multi-functional tasks.
  • Ability to learn varied technical tasks readily and adhere to prescribed rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to respond to the public in a calm, effective manner.
  • Ability to work effectively with co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a stressful environment.
  • Ability to discern emergency from non-emergency situations under time constraints.
  • Ability to make decisions and function effectively in high-stress emergency situations.
  • Ability to develop telephone attitudes: sincerity, interest, friendliness, confidence, and courtesy.
  • Ability to maintain security and confidentiality.
